TxDOT's Austin District is looking for ONE (1) Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II or III (General Transportation Tech), based out of our Bastrop Maintenance Office. This position will perform routine work related to transportation activities such as construction inspection, routine and contract maintenance inspection, bridge inspection and record keeping, roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control, assisting the public during emergency situations, and training other employees.

You must maintain 12-months of continuous employment with TxDOT and meet all other conditions. This position is for a Roadway Maintenance Tech I, II, or III (General Transportation Tech I/II/III). Salary Plan/Grade:

Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech I: A16 ($40,918.00- $61,130.00/yearly)

Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech II: A17 ($42,976.00 - $64,469.00/yearly)

Roadway Maintenance/General Transportation Tech III: A18 ($45,521.00- $71,055/yearly)

Position Description

This position performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for the Roadway Maintenance I,II, or III (General Transportation Tech) include:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas; performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yard or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


Additional duties for Roadway Maintenance II ( General Transportation Tech II) include:

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Additional duties for Roadway Maintenance III ( General Transportation Tech III) include:

  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Provides support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; and provides assistance to stranded motorists.
  • Serves as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
  • Maintains construction project records and bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork: reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

Experience:

    • Roadway Maintenance I ( GTT I) = No experience required
    • Roadway Maintenance II ( GTT II) = 1 year experience*
    • Roadway Maintenance III ( GTT III) = 2 years' experience*


*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .

Licenses and Certifications:

    • Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
    • Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 365calendar days from date of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
