Position Overview:
The Rochester located Senior Academic Advisor contributes to the School of Nursing's mission by providing student services to undergraduate students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree program on the Rochester campus. The staff member will support the overall function of OSCAS by assisting with assessment, policy and procedure creation and implementation, academic progression, and serving as the first line of contact for Rochester located BSN student needs. The Rochester located Senior Academic Advisor additionally provides team support through peer leadership.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of OSCAS/Undergraduate Programs Coordinator, the Rochester located Senior Academic Advisor also works closely with the BSN Program Directors. Located in Rochester, the person in this position shares responsibility for coverage of the Nursing Suite and will have the option to work a hybrid schedule with 2-3 days on campus per week depending on the time of year. Occasional night and weekend work may be required in this role. Estimated salary range is $54,471.22 - $72,174.36; salary is commensurate with candidate's qualifications and experience.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Academic and Career Advising 75%
  • Serve as primary Advisor to all Rochester-located Nursing students in the BSN program (approximately 220 students).
  • Utilize the University of Minnesota's Advising Philosophy to develop and sustain meaningful student relationships to guide, challenge, and support them in becoming self-reliant and in learning to make reflective decisions about academic, personal, and career aspirations.
  • Advise students on course selection, graduation planning, academic success skills, and career and graduate school exploration.
  • Provide individual career coaching regarding application materials, licensure, and the job search.
  • Communicate and implement University policies, unit procedures, curricular requirements, and referrals to campus services.
  • Integrate student development and advising theories in advising practices to holistically support students and their transition to University life.
  • Serve as an engaged member of the Undergraduate Team by communicating and advocating for student needs and concerns.
  • Maintain accurate information about students through systems such as APLUS, PeopleSoft, and the School of Nursing database.
  • Monitor students' academic and degree progress.
  • Analyze data and prepare reports on undergraduate nursing student trends.
  • Work closely with Assistant Dean for Pre-Licensure Programs, Co-Director of the BSN Program, Assistant Director of OSCAS and Director of OSCAS to prepare nursing content for current and prospective student materials.
  • Collaborate with other academic advisors at the University for networking and identifying best practice advising skills and methods
    Provide peer leadership and assist with training and development of new advisors as needed.
  • Identify systemic barriers to success and explore solutions that will benefit all students.

Programming and Initiatives 20%
  • Work with the Student Engagement Coordinator to plan and execute New Student Orientation and BSN Welcome Day in Rochester.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of select events in collaboration with Twin Cities located team (e.g. Career Month, Welcome to the Profession, Commencement, etc.) as determined by the Assistant Director.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations regarding proposed priorities and overall direction of Nursing undergraduate student services.
  • Collaborate with key partners at the University of Minnesota Rochester to support success of the One Program, Two Campus model (e.g. Student Success Coaching, One Stop, Residence Life).
  • Collaborate with Nursing faculty and staff to inform the development of initiatives and support to Nursing students on both campuses.
  • Serve on School of Nursing and University-wide committees as requested.
  • Support the management of student finances and fees by collaborating with the Scholarship Committee and Business Office on waivers, exemptions, and credit thresholds.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to encourage and sustain professional growth.
  • Other program duties as assigned or required.

BSN Transfer Student Recruitment 5%
  • Foster a connection between UMR Early Assurance students and the BSN program in collaboration with UMR Success Coach.
  • Serve as Nursing representative at recruitment and admitted student events taking place in Rochester (e.g. Discovery Days, BSN Expo) when Student Engagement Coordinator is unavailable.
  • Be available for backup to assist with virtual information sessions and answer prospective student emails when needed.
  • Connect individually with prospective students on a case-by-case basis when referred by the Student Engagement Coordinator


Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree plus five years of relevant experience or Master's degree plus at least three years of relevant experience.
  • Evidence of ability to establish and maintain relationships with a diverse student, staff, and faculty population.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize conflicting demands and navigate complex situations with nuance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively, and with supervision.
  • Ability to display accountability and responsibility in determining priorities and implementing processes that will match the mission and values of the Office of Student and Career Advancement Services.
  • Ability to travel to the Twin Cities campus occasionally and work some evenings and occasional weekends.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advising or related experience at the U of M Twin Cities or Rochester.
  • Experience working with the following systems: PeopleSoft, APAS, and APLUS.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply complex policies.
  • Experience working with health science students.
