Terms of Employment: 180 days

Evaluation Period:
  • Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per WCS Performance and Assessment Procedures.
  • Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1.
Purpose of the Position:
  • To provide safe and efficient operation of a school bus under the guidance of the transportation department while transporting students to and from school and during trips.
Minimum Requirements: The following are the qualifications and minimum requirements necessary for a person to perform this job.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Meets requirements as set forth in Indiana Code 20-27 chapter 8.
  • Meets requirements as set forth in 575 Indiana Administrative Code Rule 8.
  • Indiana Commercial Driver's License - Minimum Class B (endorsements/restrictions apply)
  • Meets requirements as set forth in Federal Motor Carrier rules.
  • Meets standards of required background checks for employment including driving record check.
  • Completion of school bus driver training.
  • Meets requirements as set forth in the School Bus Driver's Employment Agreement.
  • Maintains composure and patience in a high stress environment.
  • Models consistent attendance and punctuality as routes and or trips are driven per schedule fixed by the transportation department.
Essential Functions of the Position: The following functions have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.
  • Safety and efficiently transport school students via a school bus to and from school and trips.
  • Maintain school bus based on maintenance schedules and ensuring the vehicle is pre-trip inspection ready.
  • Keep the school bus clean both inside and out.
  • Be responsible to report any service and/or mechanical issues as needed to maintain a school bus that meets safe operating conditions and in compliance with State School Bus Committee rules and applicable statutory provisions.
  • Operate consistently in compliance with all school, local, State, and Federal laws, rules, policies, and procedures that govern the safe operation of a school bus and student transportation.
  • Provide supervision and control of students between the homes or alternative sites of the students and the school(s).
  • Keep order and maintain discipline in the bus, being firm but polite, impartial, and fair, and see that no child is imposed upon or mistreated while in the drivers care.
Secondary Functions of the Position: The following functions, while important and necessary to the position, have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be marginal to the successful performance of this position.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed or as directed by the Superintendent and/or Director of Transportation.
Knowledge of:
  • Policies, procedures and functions of Wa-Nee Community Schools Board of Trustees, Wa-Nee Transportation Department, and the Indiana Department of Education as well as all Federal and State laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Vehicle operation.
  • Bus route and student stops.
  • Technology: i.e. cell phone, email, and basic Microsoft products.
  • Area city and county roads and maps.

  • Effectively maintain a positive, professional working relationship with students in regard to behavior.
  • Maintain composure and patience in a high stress environment.

  • Transportation office, school buildings, garage/lot, school buses, remote locations, etc.
