Under the supervision of the Courier Manager, provides for the pickup and delivery of laboratory specimens between client offices and the laboratory, ensuring constant excellent customer service. The Courier position is a physical, fast-paced, job that involves continual lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, and carrying items that typically weigh 5 - 25 lbs. and may weigh up to 50 lbs. It requires excellent attention to detail and constant fast paced walking.

Job Specific Responsibilities: (to include, but limited to)

  • While using an assigned Laboratory vehicle, provides timely pick up of time sensitive lab specimens from multiple MGB Outreach client locations and deliver promptly to the Salem Hospital Laboratory for processing.
  • Transports all types of specimens (frozen, room Temp, Stat, routine) in an Osha compliant tote.
  • Ability to communicate with dispatcher in a clear manner.
  • Knowledge of Bluetooth phones for dispatching purposes.
  • Delivers lab supplies throughout the day to various Outreach clients, Nursing homes, and other Hospitals while ensuring constant excellent customer service skills.
  • Delivers lab reports, mail and other correspondence to client offices.
  • Documents all pickup and delivery information to route sheets in an appropriate and clear manner.
  • Fills out a daily/nightly pre-post trip sheet and makes sure laboratory vehicles are maintained and kept neat and clean after each shift.
  • Records all gas related transaction on route sheet (drivers receive an Irving gas card for lab car fill ups)
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment in accordance with the OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens Standard, Infection Control and Safety Policies.
  • Collaborate with members of the Laboratory Support Staff Team to promote department goals.
  • Serves as a positive role model to others in areas of: Communication, Development of interpersonal relations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for service and operational excellence of all assigned department activities.
  • Ensures the delivery of quality services and/or outcomes required to meet or exceed the expectations of those utilizing or impacted by the department.

Skills: (Specific learned activity gained through training, e.g., typing, presentation skills, computer skills; e.g. Excel; CPR,ACLS)

Required: Good attention and concentration. Good visual, verbal and hearing skills. Ability to deal with a wide range of personality types and ages necessary. Able to read and write English. Basic computer skills which may be obtained thru on the job training. The courier position is a physical, fast paced job that involves constant in and out of lab car, a sense of urgency when it comes to walking to and from assigned lab car, in and out of client locations, along with being able to lift items weighing up to 50lbs. All couriers will be responsible for day-to-day vehicle maintenance and keeping their assigned a MGB lab car filled up and clean at all times. Must be able to drive and work in varying weather conditions. Each courier route contains approximate 20 -35 stops, we have local and long-distance routes that operate 7 days a week. There will be long periods of walking while out in the field, and when back at the Hospital dropping off blood specimens.
