The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD, known as "The HARRIS CENTER," is seeking an experienced Safety and Security Associate to join our team. The safety and security associate is responsible for performing safety and security duties as assigned at each agency site. Duties include community engagement, involvement in the emergency response to various incidents, routine checks of facility, grounds, and parking areas to mitigate and report health and safety hazards, safety inspections, lock and alarm checks, incident reporting, and other duties as assigned by Safety and Security leadership. Shift hours, locations and job duties may change to support the needs of the agency.

The HARRIS CENTER is the state-designated Local Mental Health Authority and Local Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) Authority serving Harris County, Texas. As the largest behavioral and developmental disability care center in Texas, The Harris Center provided care to over 96,000 people in fiscal year 2023!
As part of its mission to transform the lives of people with behavioral health and IDD needs in the third largest county in the United States, The HARRIS CENTER provides a full continuum of services at 86 different sites across Harris County. In addition, services are provided in more than 40 different languages as well as sign language to better serve what is one of the most diverse and multi-cultural communities in the nation.
By utilizing the unique expertise of its more than 2,500 employees, The Harris Center is committed to meeting the behavioral health and IDD needs of Harris County residents and giving them hope to live to their fullest potential.
Your role in Action:
- Perform safety and security patrols which include interior and exterior checks of all facilities on site to provide maximum safety coverage.
- Respond to non-police emergency calls to include (but not limited to) fire & security alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous material spills and leaks, pedestrian, or vehicular traffic control on property.
- Complete reports/documentation to include (but not limited to) incident reports, vendor logs, weekly site safety inspections, and any others as they are needed.
- Perform weekly site safety inspections to include (but not limited to) the checking of fire equipment condition, locks and alarm devices, and any other potential hazards.
- Respond to conflicts or confrontations between agency staff, visitors, individuals served, or other persons at assigned site.
- Serves individuals by answering questions and providing directions to proper building or office.
- Document & report suspicious activity.
- Enhances organization by analyzing operating practices; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Attends all training courses and meetings as directed.
- Provides walking escort as requested.
- Responsible for the opening/closing of a clinic to ensure maximum security.
- Use of two-way radios to communicate with other staff on-site.
- Maintain attendance with your designated shift established by the Supervisor and communicate in the event this cannot be met.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What qualifications you will need:
Education :
- High School Diploma or General Education diploma
Experience:
- 1 year of customer service experience required. Customer service experience in a healthcare or educational environment preferred.
- Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
Other Key Qualifications:
- TxDPS Non-Commissioned Security Officer License a plus
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in interacting with internal/external customers.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a large region.
- Ability to interact with staff and consumers with a high degree of professionalism.
- Ability to multi-task and accommodate high volume
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts to accurately report data
- Demonstrates Computer Skills (Windows and Microsoft Suite)
- Outlook, Excel, Word processing program and HR systems.
