ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

The City of Phoenix Solid Waste Management team is highly regarded in the solid waste industry. The team oversees various innovative, efficient, and customer service-oriented programs aimed at protecting and serving the public. Due to these programs, the Public Works Department is seeking innovative, talented, and hardworking individuals to improve existing city programs and keep up with the fast-evolving industry.

Solid Waste Supervisors are responsible for overseeing a diverse staff engaged in solid waste and recyclables collection, disposal, diversion, education, enforcement, and customer service activities. Their duties include safety and new hire training using existing resources, conducting oral presentations, and proficiency in the use of solid waste equipment and standard procedures. This position also involves daily computer use for administrative tasks, employee tracking, correspondence drafting and responding, data collection and reporting, and technical report writing.

Currently, there is one Solid Waste Safety Training Supervisor vacancy within the Solid Waste Safety section.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledge of code enforcement for public and commercial solid waste operations.

SALARY

Pay Range: $25.56 to 53.13 per hour.

Hiring Range: $25.56 to $37.76 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of experience in the enforcement of City Codes and regulations.
  • One year of supervisory or lead experience.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Experience with:
  • The field of solid waste and/or recycling collection, disposal, compliance monitoring and/or education.
  • Regulations pertaining to solid waste management and solid waste collection.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to individuals and small groups.
  • Training operators and/or field staff in collections operations and safety practices.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail, and electronic calendaring.
  • Coordinating, developing, and facilitating training on a variety of safety topics.
  • Solid waste collection and disposal operations.
  • Managing performance standards, processes and procedures.
  • Managing heavy equipment operators and equipment.
  • Managing and delivering customer service.
