Sanitation Technician (6329)

The City of Takoma Park is seeking a Sanitation Technician to become a member of the Solid Waste Division within the Department of Public Works. The Sanitation Technician serves as a member of a collection crew responsible for collection of refuse and recyclables.

Typical Duties include:

• Collecting residential recyclables, waste, garbage, and other miscellaneous items;
• Collecting refuse from public containers in streets, parks, or other City property;
• Collecting scheduled heavy or bulk items;
• Driving small (non-CDL) trucks as needed to facilitate collection;
• Responding to questions about collection procedures from the general public;
• Performing public works yard clean-up and cleaning of public works vehicles;
• Assisting with snow removal;
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Physical requirements and working conditions include:

• Walking, running, standing, bending, crouching, and stooping;
• Frequent lifting of objects of all sizes and weights;
• Working outside in all weather conditions;
• Frequent exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and irritating chemicals.

Minimum Qualifications include:

• High school diploma or GED; and,
• Six months of work experience; or,
• Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
• Valid Driver's License

The hourly wage for this position is expected to be between $19.49 and $22.96 and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. This position is eligible for membership within the AFSCME union.
