Summary: Operates District assigned vehicles in a professional manner to transport students over established routes according to specified time schedules. Complies with all traffic regulations and always maintains student and staff safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)
Operates District-assigned vehicles in a consistently professional manner, ensuring the safe delivery of students and staff. Demonstrates proficiency in handling and maneuvering a school bus at all times.
Performs and properly completes daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections consistent with District procedures. Cleans debris and sweeps the bus daily and washes the bus weekly.
Complies with all traffic ordinances. Reports unsafe situations to the supervisor.
Complies with District discipline policies. Reports issues and concerns for student safety and discipline to the supervisor in a timely manner.
Provides direction and assistance to students, as necessary, while operating the vehicle.
Responds to stressful conditions in a professional manner; reports incidents to the supervisor.
Participates in assigned training.
Understands and follows District transportation scheduling, as assigned.
Returns lost items to the respective schools.

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI); Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and first aid certification required.
Licenses, Registrations: Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Senior Vermont Operators' License with Vermont School Bus Endorsement. Must have no points on driving record and be able to pass physical, including drug tests.
Language Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, staff, and members of the greater school community.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply basic math skills: addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication and weight, measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems usually presented in standardized situations. Ability to maintain focus and appropriately respond to traffic events quickly.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work in a friendly, collaborative manner with students, staff, and others; demonstrates patience, kindness, and courtesy. Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to pass state skill test, written test, and Department of Transportation physical. Ability to manage students and equipment. Ability to observe student behavior and advise supervisors of concerns and/or issues. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and School Board policies. While performing the duties of this job, the employee operates vehicles with others present and is frequently required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently will reach above the head, to the side, and forward. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp the steering wheel, radio/equipment, or help special needs students in appropriate situations. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and push or pull up to 90 pounds such as students in wheelchairs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distant vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100° and below 32° and occasionally will walk and drive on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints, while maintaining the safety considerations of transporting students and staff. The employee must be able to interact with students, staff, and the greater school community in a positive and effective manner. The employee has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.
The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud. A public address system is available in all buses and drivers use the system periodically.
Terms of Employment: School Year or as specified on the Memorandum of Agreement.
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated at least annually by the according to the stated performance objectives and the qualities and characteristics contained on the evaluation form.
