The high school counselor renders educational, occupational and personal guidance service to students, individually and in groups, and serves therein as liaison between the school and home.
The duties commonly associated with the position include but are not limited to:
- counseling students in educational choices
- counseling students on educational adjustments and other academic matters
- advising students who seek a change in curriculum
- disseminating information, conducting interviews and holding meetings on educational opportunities at the next higher level
- helping students apply for admission to other educational institutions
- communicating with students, parents, and other district employees to work on behalf of students
- disseminating information on educational grants, work-study programs, scholarships and loan opportunities and helping students apply
- counseling students on planning occupational careers
- providing orientation for new students
- giving individual guidance on the student's personal problems when these problems affect the school or student's school work
- serving as liaison and coordinator for referrals to specialized help
- conducting conferences, during and after school hours, with parents/caregivers and teachers
- promoting equity and appreciation of diversity
Job Requirements
Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred.
MA DESE Certification School Counselor All Levels.
Experience working as a school counselor at the secondary level; working knowledge of Xello, PowerSchool and the college application process.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with a strong attention to detail; strong communication, problem-solving and organizational skills.
