The United States Space Force (USSF) at Vandenberg Space Force Base is searching for a Scientific and Technical Imagery Specialist for SLD 30 / 2ROPS (NH-1060-02, GS-5/11 Equivalent).

Description:

In this role, the chosen individual specializes in dynamic still and video engineering photography utilizing mobile optical tracking mounts. Capturing highly specialized imagery pertinent to space and missile launch and recovery operations is at the core of the Photographer's responsibilities. These encompass deploying advanced tracking systems, adapting to diverse conditions, leading photography assignments, and orchestrating technical documentation. Operating optical data acquisition systems, managing equipment, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and staying updated with technological advancements are central aspects. The role extends to ensuring meticulous data collection and producing exceptional photographic and video materials. Moreover, the Photographer serves as a subject matter expert, disseminating technical expertise and guiding fellow team members, while concurrently overseeing equipment maintenance and compliance initiatives.

Ideal Candidate:-

The ideal candidate possesses a preferred degree in photography, videography, or a related field, with a preference for such qualifications. The candidate brings with them a proven history of specialized competence in still and video photography. Their mastery extends to optical tracking systems and visual data collection equipment, accompanied by a skillful command of state-of-the-art cameras, lenses, software, and associated apparatus. Proficiency in various photo, video, and audio file formats, protocols, and interfaces underscores this individual's adaptability. Even in rapidly changing scenarios, the candidate's impeccable attention to detail shines, synergizing with adept problem-solving abilities and a capacity to provide astute technical recommendations. Effective leadership and collaborative prowess define their teamwork, complemented by excellent communication and interpersonal acumen. The candidate's grasp of safety protocols, possession of a valid driver's license, and ability to operate government-owned vehicles coalesce to present an individual poised to excel in the role.

Key Skills and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of remotely operated optical electro-mechanical optical tracking systems.

2. Knowledge of electrical power requirements and the operation of power generators, power supply units, and test equipment.

3. Knowledge of a variety of still photographic and video capture principles, techniques, and practices.

4. Knowledge and understanding on how camera and lens systems are controlled and to record optical data.

5. Knowledge of specialized digital photography such as High Definition, High Speed, and Infrared and other specialized equipment.

6. Ability to research, analyze, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, and procedures to a wide variety of engineering, and contractual situations, and to recommend sound technical solutions that meet mission schedule restrictions.

7. Ability to provide technical information and recommendations to supervisors during planning and preparation phases of optical coverage requirements on new equipment needs and technical upgrades for future improvements.

8. Ability to independently plan and carry out work assignments and resolve common technical problems.

9. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • This position is not eligible for telework.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
  • May be required to travel by military or commercial aircraft in the performance of TDY assignments.
  • May be required to work overtime on an unscheduled or emergency basis.
  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise; employee must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.
  • PCS/Relocation funding is not available.

  • Position will be closed after 5 business days or after 75 applications are received.
  • Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, recurring bending, crouching, or stretching, and recurring lifting of moderately heavy equipment (50lbs) and materials.
  • Must be able to pass the physical, obtain and maintain a Class A driver's license to tow mobile tracking mounts with up to 10-ton tractors.
  • Technical and manual dexterity are required to perform optical tracking.
  • Good color vision and hand-eye coordination are required.
  • Work is performed at remote optical sites where in many cases where supervision and technical direction is not available.
  • Employee must use good judgment to interpret and adapt existing guidelines to specific cases and problems. Judgment is also required to determine the changing weather and lighting conditions that will enhance the desired outcome for digital products.
  • Work is performed both inside and outside under varying weather conditions. The employee is subject to soiling of clothing. Safety precautions and equipment are required.
