As an R&D scientist, you will assist in the development, characterization, and scale-up of new materials used in the manufacture of ophthalmic devices. These activities will occur under minimal direction and in accordance with department procedures. You will provide material technical expertise on project teams to develop new products and conduct material analysis as necessary.

You will work with senior members of the team and partner with various internal groups to ensure conformance to quality and regulatory standard practices, perform experimental protocols in cooperation with other departments within JJV.

Participation in material investigations as they pertain to product quality concerns will occur. You will perform work according to testing plans to determine the root cause of material-related issues and develop testing methodologies and specifications to detect and control any material issues.

You will have the opportunity to present data within the department and project team meetings with appropriate level of statistical analysis and write technical reports with general supervisory input. This individual will work within established guidelines and has flexibility to decide the method, priority, and timing of job duties.

Role Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct experimental protocols under supervision to understand material interactions within formulations and their impact on final product performance.
  • Formulate multi-component mixtures and use them to produce small batches of ophthalmic lenses and solutions for evaluation.
  • Perform sampling and evaluation of raw materials. Ensure proper labeling and storage of chemicals in the laboratory.
  • Communicate project status and findings to multiple levels of the R&D organization.
  • Document work in notebooks, reports, and manuscripts, adhering to applicable regulations and ensuring that records and raw data are accurately retained.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of bachelor's degree with 2 years industrial experience or a master's degree (or equivalent experience) in Material Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Bioengineering (or related fields).
  • Ability to work with minimal levels of supervision is required.
  • Up to 5% domestic travel is required.
