About the College/Unit/Department

Part of the Division of Student Affairs, University Housing consists of nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and is home to more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full-time staff members, 21 graduate assistants and 565 undergraduate student workers. As a self-supporting auxiliary, University Housing operates a $59 million budget derived only from student housing fees and other non-state sources.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years' security, police or military experience
  • Work experience on a University Campus.


Position Summary

This position assists in the proper protection of persons and property in and around the on-campus residence halls operated by University Housing. Key responsibilities include monitoring for safety hazards, conducting patrols, interacting professionally with students and staff, maintaining accurate paperwork, and providing coverage during holidays, breaks, and special events as needed.

  • Ability to write clear and accurate shift and incident reports.
  • Ability to remain calm and confident in stressful situations, while balancing the needs of customer service.


Physical Demands
  • Walk 5 miles or more during a shift.
  • Visual acuity to see security or safety issues during the night hours.
  • Verbally communicate and hear any sounds of distress.
  • Safely operate a UGA state vehicle as necessary.
  • May occasionally perform work related duties outdoors in hot or cold weather conditions.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Watches for and reports all life safety issues such as suspicious person, fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked.
  • Examines doors, windows and gates to determine that they are secure.
  • Patrols on foot, periodically, during each shift, checking buildings and grounds in and around the on-campus residence halls.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Interact with both students and department staff in a respectful and professional way.
  • Maintain and submit accurate, detailed and professional paperwork and reports.
  • Provide coverage during all University holidays and breaks.
  • Work with and support UGA Police Officers as directed by the Officers when they enter the residence halls.
  • Complete required training during off-shift hours.
  • Provide coverage during special events such as football games, residence hall move-in days, and other events that may arise.
