Position Purpose

To provide personal and asset protection for patients, visitors, and employees throughout the Medical Center facility and to prevent any potential hazardous conditions through continuous monitoring of all areas

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Maintains personal and asset security by conducting complete and through hazard surveillance rounds with strong emphasis on protecting patients, staff and hospital property

1. Access control:
  • Assists in orienting and training new employees, as assigned.
  • Makes badges for volunteers, contractors and replacement badges for employees.
  • Issues parking passes to appropriate parking assignment.
  • Checks doors and locks, both manual and electronic, for proper function and security.

2. Actively participates in investigations:
  • Investigates incidents and writes reports as required by Security Department policy.
  • Investigates all complaints and/or incidents coming to their attention. Conducts initial investigation, records all facts, interviews witnesses and collects evidence as necessary.

3. Enforces departmental and hospital policies:
  • Monitors the security and safety conditions on the Hospital campus, and reports any violations or corrective actions as needed.
  • Monitors the campus for safety violations, including smoking, outdated fire extinguishers and other safety equipment.
  • Monitors the campus for parking violations. Writes tickets and reports to supervisor for follow up action.
  • Communicates, interprets and enforces hospital and departmental policies and procedures to employees, visitors, patients, etc.
  • Notifies supervisors on all matters not specifically covered by established hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

4. Patient Assistance:
  • Moves deceased patients in and out of the morgue and accurately signs patient log.
  • Assists with funeral home or Medical Examiner release from the morgue assuring correct patient and belongings going to receiving facility.
  • As directed by appropriate medical staff or their supervisor, assists in restraining or directing individuals, as the situation requires, who exhibit abnormal behavior.

5. Patrols and secures property:
  • Patrol the grounds, interior, parking areas and buildings at DCH. Report any unusual situations or conditions such as malfunctions of building systems, exterior lighting, illegal entry, fire, theft, vandalism, etc., to shift supervisor.
  • Secures various exterior and interior doors as necessary. Secures exterior doors at designated times as required for routine safety and security of Hospital operations.
  • Monitors the lights both inside and outside the Hospital, reports any lights out to Plant Operations. Reports any damage noted to exterior hospital property to Plant Operations.
  • Communicates routine or special messages using portable radios in accordance with hospital and government regulations.
  • Monitors CCTV, alarms and other electronic devices, as directed.

6. Provides customer service duties:
  • Provides escorts for patients, visitors and employees.
  • Performs unlocks and secures doors for various departments within the Hospital.
  • Greets all patients, visitors and staff, making eye contact and providing an appropriate greeting to the customer.
  • Provides escorts, directions and assists customers as needed. Anticipates customers' needs.
  • Provides assistance to include wheelchairs or other support for customers with mobility issues.
  • Uses accepted telephone and customer service etiquette when addressing customers.
  • Displays a commitment to the value of teamwork by building strong relationships with patients, families, coworkers and the surrounding community; and by being cooperative and collaborative in the performance of duties to promote a unified and spirited workpla

7. Report writing
  • Prepares, in writing, incident reports as required by the Security Department and Hospital Policy.
  • Follows up on reports and makes supplemental reports as required.
  • Enforces and documents all violations of hospital policies.
  • Maintains logs: lost and found items, patient valuables/belongings, etc. Maintains key control assignments.

8. Responds to calls for assistance:
  • Responds to all routine calls for service in the Hospital, such as reports of incidents, assists with patients, trespassers, thefts and other criminal acts, etc.
  • Responds to emergency calls on the Hospital campus such as fires, crimes in progress, violent patients or visitors, etc.
  • Responds to assists for staff/visitors in need of directions or other routine customer service calls.
  • Responds to customer service needs, quickly, professionally and efficiently.


Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to be physically active, i.e. extended walking, running.
  • Must be able to hear normal sounds and with some background noise.
  • Must be able to work out of doors.
  • Routinely lifts light to heavy objects using good body mechanics.


Qualifications and Experience

  • At least three (3) year experience in government (e.g. military), private security, law enforcement or corrections.
  • High School Graduate or equivalent Minimal typing skills required.
  • Must have written and conversational knowledge of the English language.

  • Key Relationships: Works in partnership with other staff members and physicians.
