Pay Range

$132,810 -$170,556Annually

Job Description

We have an opening for a Senior Accelerator Technician to support the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. You will work closely with a team of scientists that develop and apply novel particle accelerator capabilities to solve challenging fundamental science and national security problems across a wide range of disciplines and programs. This position supports the on-going operations of four high voltage accelerator systems including related equipment such as ion sources, electrostatic and magnetic steerers and lenses, particle detectors, and vacuum systems. You will be a part of the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry group in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division of the Physical and Life Science Directorate.

You will
  • Maintain, install, and upgrade high voltage particle accelerators and associated components.
  • Help identify and propose solutions to off-normal operating conditions for the CAMS accelerator systems.
  • Respond to requests (including off-hours) for assistance from accelerator operators to diagnose and troubleshoot abnormal behavior.
  • Contribute to the development of technical requirements for new and replacement components of the CAMS accelerator systems and related infrastructure.
  • Assist the CAMS Operations Manager in the planning and execution of major maintenance events.
  • Provide day-to-day mentorship to junior technical staff and student interns.
  • Coordinate with appropriate support services to ensure that necessary calibration and certification of safety systems (e.g., radiation monitoring, oxygen alarm, etc.) are performed on time.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on expertise in the operation and maintenance of tandem accelerators and associated equipment including Cs-sputter ion sources, power supplies, and vacuum equipment for AMS applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to program and maintain instrument control software using LabVIEW.
  • Working knowledge of the policies and procedures required to safely operate particle accelerators and radiation generating devices at LLNL.
  • Experience working with high voltage electrical equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing electronic and mechanical devices.
  • Experience with design and fabrication of parts using CAD and machine tools.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
