Job Summary:

The Senior Associate Director works alongside the Executive Director to oversee and manage the many activities of the Consortium, which involves Northwestern, UIC, and the University of Chicago, as well as CBC-HITES universities (DPI, Rush, Loyola, Rosalind Franklin, and Northern Illinois University). The AD will help develop and execute programming strategy concerning CBC/ CBC-HITES programs including the BioCapital Summit and the Entrepreneurial Fellows. Charged with connecting people, managing projects and communications, and providing oversight for CBC-supported facilities in this multi-institutional organization, the Associate Director will (1) have primary responsibility for running the process for the BioCapital Summit, which includes liaising with logistics and event planning, developing invitations to VC and scientists, operations, and strategy of the Summit (2) administer and execute the Entrepreneurial Fellow program. These programs will be critical to the CBC's ability to attract and maintain partnerships, enhance local and regional economic development, build engagement, elevate the reputation of our member institution scientists, inspire donations, and increase funding support.

Please note: Associate Director must have transportation available to regularly visit UIC & U. Chicago.

Specific Responsibilities :
  • Collaborate with Venture Capitalists and scientists to plan and direct the CBC BioCapital Summit.
  • Act as program liaison to coordinate collaborative activities involving individuals at NU, UC, UIC, and CBC-HITES faculty, which will require i) establishing strong working relationships with faculty members who are award recipients or members of advisory boards, and ii) facilitating interactions between faculty at different institutions who are interested in forming inter-institutional collaborations, and iii) staying in close contact with managers of past, current and future CBC-supported infrastructure projects to enhance collaborative use. (iv) based on literature review, funding databases, and industry trends, develop insights into shifting trends in biomedical research as it relates to the Chicagoland scientific community. Iteratively refine these insights with other members in the community like Portal Innovations, SmartHealth Catalyst, and Kaleidoscope Health Ventures. (v)identify the researchers in the area that are working on said problems and maintain up to date contact and awareness of their publications, research progress, patent filings, and funding needs.
  • Assume direction and administrative support for the CBC's Entrepreneurial Fellow (EF) program. For the EF program this includes setting up applications, review committees, and helping operationalize so that EFs can matriculate. Be the single point of contact for EFs that ensure they have all the needed logistics and administration to do their job for the year. Collect data on EFs during the program and afterwards. Update RFAs on the Web Site for the EF program as needed.
  • Assist with writing projects such as the annual report to the External Advisory Board; participate in the preparation of updates and proposals; analyze, evaluate and prepare reports on the effectiveness of various funding programs; and, if necessary, review applications requesting funding from the CBC and work with authors to strengthen their applications.
  • Develop measures of effectiveness for CBC programs and monitor project management by setting goals and developing and implementing policies and procedures within program guidelines to ensure that consistent and acceptable standards are met.
  • Manage publicity efforts in local, regional, and national scientific funding communities, create announcements and publicity pieces, and coordinate press releases with the three universities' press and development offices to cultivate exposure and recognition of the CBC.
  • Work with the CBC's website manager to develop and write news items, implement new ways to enhance web-based services, and develop a well-thought-out and executed communications (including overseeing the CBC Newsletter) and public outreach strategy.
  • Work with faculty to develop Graduate-level courses and student activities in CBC-interest areas, integrating as needed with EF curriculum, including working with the CBC Scholars program for advanced graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A master's degree required preferably in Biomedical or Natural Sciences or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired

Preferred Qualifications:
  • An MD or Ph.D. in the Biomedical or Natural Sciences
  • Significant experience with academic biomedical research, management of core facilities, and university administration
  • Experience in writing and/or reviewing grant applications
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with one or more of the CBC institutions
  • Preference for those with applied science experience preferably in bio-pharmaceutical/ life science industry, especially familiarity with early stage drug development
  • Experience mentoring junior scientists and developing talent
  • Experience up-managing multiple people and multiple simultaneous projects within tight timelines
  • Other relevant experience

  • Knowledge of the Microsoft suite of products
  • An understanding of the academic process - from graduate student to post-doc, to faculty
  • Some familiarity with the Chicagoland biomedical ecosystem
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
The target hiring range for this position will be between $90,000 - $102,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
