The Senior Counselor provides counseling to students and consultation to faculty, staff, and the community through individual, couples, family, group & crisis counseling/interventions for the benefit of the campus community. The individual in this position will assess individuals at risk of suicide, self-harm, harm to others, and risk to the campus community. This position collaborates with counseling center staff, provides consultation to faculty/staff from outside departments, conducts outreach and mental health education to the campus community. The individual in this position is expected to participate in case consultation and provide support to other departmental events/activities. This position may provide mediation services for students when deemed necessary. The Senior Counselor must maintain appropriate licenses, certifications, and continuing education to maintain a knowledge base of best practices in the field. This position may provide supervision to student interns, as designated by the Center director. If this position provides supervision to post-master's degree clinicians, the individual must be in compliance with the supervision licensure laws designated by the state of Tennessee.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Counseling & Clinical Responsibilities

Provide ongoing support services, such as counseling or psychoeducational interventions, for students to facilitate readiness and success on the college campus; engage students to make decisions that can impact personal and academic success during matriculation and beyond; consult and provide psychoeducation with other departments, the campus community, prospective students and families, and alumni as needed on mental health topics; provide individual supervision and complete evaluations for practicum/internship students and pre-licensed professionals as assigned by the Director; provide risk assessment and referral for students and university staff; provide crisis consultation and crisis support as needed.

Administrative Responsibilitie

Coordinate with outside units as assigned; liaise with other departments as assigned; make recommendations regarding expenditures for Counseling Center resources, training, travel expenses, media and electronic resources, assessments, and information management systems; participate in search committees and staff hiring as needed; participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings with clinical staff.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices and current trends with regard to collegiate mental health
  • Skills delivering evidence-based interventions with the college population
  • Knowledge of issues impacting the mental health of underserved and marginalized populations
  • Ability to provide risk assessment and mental health assessment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use appropriate technology, such as electronic health record systems and Microsoft applications
  • Ability to speak in public
  • Advanced skills delivering evidence-based interventions
  • Ability to supervise pre-licensed mental health professionals

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related mental health field; two years of professional mental health experience (post-degree); TN State licensure or eligibility in respective mental health field required upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to supervise pre-licensed mental health professionals for TN licensure; experience providing mental health services on a college or university campus; experience working with individuals with learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, or severe mental illness; supervisor credential in respective mental health field.
