Summary

Provides support for a complex computing environment in the areas of hardware, software, and network to users within the unit. Represents unit on university-wide technology committees and provides support of special applications and for special projects for the unit and its customers. Specific responsibilities include installations, upgrades and trouble-shooting of all new existing hardware and software; email administration; LAN configuration and administration; assistance with equipment purchasing; coordination and scheduling of vendors and maintenance providers. Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field, or related experience, and 3 to 5 years experience. Master's degree preferred. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position are nonexempt.

What You'll Do

The Senior Desktop Support Specialist will play a crucial role on the Procurement team within the Business Enablement Team (BET). This position is responsible for providing comprehensive computer and application support for both custom and commercial applications. The successful candidate will be adept at writing and maintaining scripts, server maintenance, creating documentation, and working closely with users, technical support, and vendors to set up and maintain hardware.
This role involves providing at-the-elbow technical support at multiple locations. The position also requires the ability to maintain good working relationships with MiServer, MiDatabase, MiStorage, MiWorkspace teams, and any other technical teams across the University.
  • Provide technical support for custom and commercial applications, e.g., Avanti, OMS500, G2, Counterpoint, Powerbuilder Apps, Zoom Room eqmt., etc.
  • Write and maintain scripts to automate tasks and improve efficiency.
  • Perform server maintenance and ensure system reliability.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for IT processes and systems.
  • Collaborate with users, technical support, and vendors to set up and maintain hardware and software.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ensure confidentiality and security of sensitive information.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.


Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, business computing, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of IT experience in a related role requiring confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, troubleshooting, and the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.


Desired Qualifications*

  • Use of scripting tools such as Powershell and VBScript
  • Experience with Active Directory tools and concepts
  • Two or more years of related experience in technical support troubleshooting Mac and Windows
  • Understanding of server hardware and concepts, including services, security, and administration
  • Experience working in higher education in a support capacity
