The Street Transportation Department has a vacancy for a Senior Engineering Technician position. The Street Transportation Office of the City Engineer oversees the selection of architects, engineers, and contractors to execute the City's 5-year, $8.2 billion Capital Improvement Program. The Utility Coordination Section coordinates and manages utility and telecommunication installations in public rights-of-way, working closely with public utility companies, contractors, engineers, various City departments, and other governmental agencies.

The Senior Engineering Technicians in Utility Coordination have several duties, they are identified below:

Utility Plan Review: Reviewing utility company drawings for proposed installation in City of Phoenix (COP) rights-of-way, ensuring that the work is performed in conformance to City, State, and Federal regulations; interpreting and analyzing engineering and construction drawings, symbols, and terminology to determine if they meet City standards; researching documentation pertaining to the issuance of utility company construction permits, and coordinating individual plan review issues with utility companies.

SUE Potholing Program Liaison: Assisting with the SUE Potholing Program. Responsibilities include interpreting Capital Improvement construction drawings, working directly with Project Managers, consultants and our JOC contractors, issuing Notices to Proceed, creating pothole reports, and balancing and processing billing and payments to the Utility Companies, CIP Projects, and JOC contractors.

Utility Map Requests: Coordinating the collection of utility maps for Capital Improvement Projects using Outlook and SharePoint. Working directly with project managers to ensure they receive all utility files within the scope of their project.

Abandonment Review: Reviewing Abandonment Requests from the Planning and Development Department against underground fiber installations to ensure their facilities will not conflict with the owner's request for abandonment.

CitizenServe Testing: Assisting with testing new phases and reports for the CitizenServe Cloud permitting system. Attending team meetings, identifying, and suggesting enhancements is expected and encouraged.

SALARY

Pay Range: $21.02 to $41.63 per hour.

Hiring Range: $21.02 to $29.58 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • Experience interpreting offsite civil engineering and dry utility plans.
  • Experience working with electronic permitting or mapping software.
  • Experience working with MS Word documents and Excel Spreadsheets.
  • Experience that displays customer service as well as working in a team environment.
  • Experience working with creating and balancing pay reports (preferably in SharePoint).
  • Experience that shows an ability to multitask between several duties and responsibilities.
  • Experience communicating with project managers, consultants, contractors, surveyors using construction terminology.
