Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
  • Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a degree, four (4) years of directly related experience, or a combination of higher education and experience totaling four (4) years may be considered.
  • Three (3) years of full-time experience as an emergency responder (volunteer experience will be considered).
  • Two (2) years of experience as an operational fire officer (volunteer experience will be considered).
  • NYS Fire Officer 1.
  • NYS/Pro Board Firefighter 1.
  • First Aid with CPR.
  • Haz-Mat Technician.
  • NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800.
  • NYS Code Enforcement Official or must be able to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • NYS Confined Space Technician.
  • Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. (***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes").

Brief Description of Duties:

The Senior Fire Safety Specialist along with the Fire Services team will work together to protect life and property and provide fire protection and emergency services to all Stony Brook University facilities and surrounding properties. The employee accomplishes this task by carrying out general duties such as (but not limited to): fire safety and extinguisher inspections; emergency response to fires, fire alarms and other emergencies; conduct fire drills and assist with the development of building emergency plans; perform inspection and testing of fire protection systems; conduct fire safety training; participate in fire prevention educational activities and events; attend required training; and provide fire safety coverage for emergencies, impairments and special events. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands, communicate effectively in verbal and written form, establish and maintain effective working relations with coworkers and other internal and outside agencies. Ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards.
  • Emergency Response Coordination:
    • During emergencies they will provide first line supervision of subordinate personnel to fulfill the mission while riding a fire apparatus. Maintains compliance with applicable reports. They will lead subordinates in emergency situations. Act as a Senior Fire Safety Specialist and member of the incident management team. Follow incident command protocol and provide direction during emergencies when needed. Collaborate with the Emergency Management team, UPD, medical personnel, and other relevant departments to ensure a coordinated response to emergencies. Establish an effective communication channel with local fire departments, law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
  • Fire Prevention and Safety:
    • Lead fire prevention efforts by conducting inspections, identifying potential hazards and recommending corrective actions to ensure compliance with fire codes and standards. Coordinator and perform fire safety and extinguisher inspections, hazard assessments on all facilities, ensuring compliance with OSHA, NYS Fire Codes, NFPA Standards and Codes, and other applicable standards. Conduct occupancy reviews of spaces for compliance. Complete inspection and deficiency report, provide follow-up to ensure that corrective action is taken, and maintain records of all activities. Perform site safety inspections and issue hot work, confined space entry and tent permits. Ensure adequate fire prevention measures and air monitoring before permit issuance. Coordinate and Conduct fire drills in all academic, residential, health care and support facilities and evaluate effectiveness of evacuations. Assist with the coordination, training and implementation of the Safety Warden and Fire Warden (UH) programs. Assist with the development of building emergency plans, evacuation plans and fire department pre planning activities. Perform periodic inspection and testing of fire protection systems (e.g. standpipes, sprinkler systems, hydrants, etc.) in accordance with NFPA Standards. Conduct tests of the water supply system to ensure adequate fire flow for fire department operations. Provide fire safety coverage at all special events, emergencies, impairments and other situations as assigned.
  • Training Programs:
    • Conduct fire safety training for students, faculty and staff to educate and inform the campus community of requirements and safety information. Participate in new student and staff orientation programs. Organize and participate in fire prevention activities and events.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Attend required training and perform practical reviews as necessary to maintain certifications and proficiency in assigned tasks. Keeps up to date on all equipment, protocols and procedures. Stay up to date with fire codes, regulations, and standards. Assist with efforts to address compliance gaps and assist with preparation of reports and documentation for regulatory audits. Ensures that all vehicles, equipment and gear are response ready. Skilled in the operation and maintenance of firefighting, rescue, EMS equipment and tools required by the position, life support techniques and emergency medical care.
  • Senior Fire Safety Specialist Duties:
    • Conduct thorough investigations to determine the cause of fires, analyzing evidence and recommending corrective actions to prevent future incidents. Perform fire safety and hazard assessment as assigned. Review drawings for conformity with the NYS Building Code, NFPA's Life Safety Code, and all referenced fire protection codes and standards as well as The Joint Commission standards. Document review and maintain records. Conduct enforcement of construction sites for conformity with all fire safety regulations as well. Have shutdown authority for immediate fire and life safety violations in consultation with the Director of Fire Safety/Director of Fire Safety and Life Safety.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

***Out-of-State Applicants: Please note as a condition of employment and in order for this position to be tendered, the successful incumbent will be required to provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of start date.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.Must maintain all required licenses and certifications throughout the period of employment.

Employees require physical fitness level essential to climb stairs, function on ladders, enter into confined spaces, work in hazardous environments and differing heights while wearing various personal protective equipment such as respirators, up to and including self-contained breathing apparatus and full body chemical protective clothing. Employees must complete an annual NFPA 1582 medical physical and be fit for duty. They shall also pass a SBU annual physical ability test.

Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
