Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory¿s Environmental Health and Safety Division is seeking a Hazardous Waste Technician Leadd to join our Chemical & Waste Management team. Members of this team are responsible for providing services to the chemical and hazardous waste management programs for the Laboratory. This position reports to the Chemical & Waste Management Department Head.

Working under general supervision, you will be responsible for accepting and processing chemical/universal hazardous wastes. You will also work with other environmental health and safety personnel, waste program customers, and outside vendors/contractors to fulfill program and regulatory requirements safely, efficiently and in a timely manner. This position reports to the Chemical & Waste Management Department Head.

Your specific responsibilities include:

• In addition to the responsibilities listed for the Hazardous Waste Technician classification, and working under limited supervision, Senior Hazardous Waste Technicians:
  • Provide guidance to clients on complex disposal projects, procedures, and problems.
  • Identify problems, propose solutions, and assist in the development of written procedures and protocols for the program.
  • Work is assigned by the cognizant supervisor and the supervisors and/or manager review work as needed.
• Working under general supervision, handle, and transport radiological and/or chemical/universal hazardous waste.
• Work with other environmental health and safety technicians, waste program customers, and outside vendors/contractors to fulfill program and regulatory requirements safely, efficiently and in a timely manner.
• Pick up chemical/universal and/or radioactive hazardous waste from laboratories, shops, and/or clinics.
• Verify the composition and labeling, perform basic segregation in accordance with on-site transportation requirements, and package them prior to transportation to the appropriate waste facility for processing. Involves routine and frequent heavy labor tasks.
• Package and prepare chemical/universal and/or radioactive wastes for shipment to off-site treatment/disposal facilities in accordance with facility packaging guidelines and DOT shipping requirements.
• May prepare radiological wastes for decay and/or incineration and segregate chemical wastes for interim storage.
• Label and mark waste shipping containers. Prepare shipping inventory sheets, manifests, and other associated documentation.
• Maintain and inspect chemical waste storage and radioactive waste decay facilities, waste pick-up vehicles and associate supplies and safety equipment. Arrange for maintenance or repair.
• Perform housekeeping duties as assigned, sweeping, mopping, dusting, etc. With guidance from the supervisor, provides customer and compliance assistance to research and facilities personnel.
• Enter data into computerized hazardous waste tracking systems.
• May serve as member of the Hazardous Material Response Team. Respond to spills and emergencies as directed.
• May perform any of the duties described in the Hazardous Waste Transportation Technician specification or other duties as assigned.
• Review waste service forms for completeness and accuracy and sign for acceptance of wastes into the storage facility.
• Perform processing of waste during acceptance into storage, including physical inspections, photographing, weighing, assigning to storage containers or locations. Properly mark, label, and segregate wastes accepted into the facility.
• Track stored waste inventory for compliance with storage time limits. Package waste items for treatment and disposal in accordance with Department of Transportation requirements, and treatment or disposal facility requirements.
• Mark, label, load, block, and brace containers for shipments. Perform facility and equipment inspections in accordance with regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Other waste processing activities include rainwater sampling and pump out, waste sampling, and characterization operations.
• Responsible for moving waste items and containers to accommodate all group operations.
• Work closely with Radiation Protection Department Groups, Environmental Protection Department Groups, and waste generators to ensure SLAC's wastes are managed in compliance with regulations.
• Obtain and maintain certifications and qualifications in: RWT II, Forklift Operation, Basic DOT, and HAZWOPER.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

• Requires knowledge and training on state and federal regulations pertaining to hazardous chemical, universal and radiological waste management, transportation, and disposal. Hazardous material coursework and/or experience working with hazardous and/or radioactive materials.
• Knowledge and training on state and federal regulations pertaining to hazardous chemical and radiological waste management, transportation, and disposal.
• Coursework and/or experience working with hazardous and/or radioactive materials.
• Familiarity with chemical, radiological and regulatory reference books.
• Knowledge of and ability to select, use and maintain specialized personnel protective equipment necessary for working with hazardous materials.
• Ability to follow protocols and policies and apply technical and regulatory information to complete work assignments and to solve problems.
• Proficiency in the use of basic computer programs, such as MS Word, Excel, Access, Power Point.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to comprehend fully and explain the applicable federal, state, and local laws/regulations and internal requirements to customers, regulators, and other stakeholders.
• Ability to work in a team environment, and independently with supervision.
• Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer support in a respectful, supportive, and service-oriented manner.
• May work with mechanical systems (e.g., solvent bulking and waste handling systems) requiring attention to detail and mechanical ability.
• Must be organized and detail oriented and be able to maintain documents and database files.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

• Associate degree in Radiation Protection or General Science with significant related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with SLAC policies and procedures for managing radioactive and mixed wastes.

Certificates and Licenses.

• Basic Department of Transportation certification.
• Current HAZWOPER training.
• Prior certification as a forklift operator preferred.

This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007 governs the terms and conditions of employment.

The expected pay range for this position is $46.73 (Step 1) - $56.51 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
