Position Overview

The Facilities Department at the University of North Texas is seeking to hire a Senior Irrigation Technician to join our team.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and install irrigation pipes, valves, controllers, and pumps.
  • Monitor campus daily to look for stressed plant material and make necessary repairs and adjustment.
  • Set up, adjust, and troubleshoot irrigation controllers.
  • Properly complete daily irrigation inspection reports.
  • Assist with ice and snow removal operations.
  • Assist in preparing campus for special events.
  • Assist in landscape and grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, trimming, weeding, and planting.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Lead irrigation technicians in daily duties.
  • Must be able to dig, lift up 50lbs, walk or kneel most of the day.
  • All other duties as assigned.

This position is considered to be essential personnel, and may require working overtime, which could include nights and weekends as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of related experience with some experience in a lead or supervisory role; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and skill in use of standard tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of general maintenance task.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of general maintenance.
  • Knowledge of blueprints, schematics, and working drawings.
  • Ability to use basic shop math applications.
  • Ability to locate and identify problems in appropriate building system or equipment and to plan and execute necessary repairs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
  • Knowledge of irrigation components and their function.
  • 4 years of experience working in irrigation.
  • 1 year of leadership experience.
  • 2 years' experience working as part of a team.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

Possession of a valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment; ability to drive a vehicle and maintain coverage under university liability insurance policy, if required to drive University vehicles.

Job Duties:
  • Oversees the training and work of a crew, in addition to assisting with digging, grading, backfilling, material installation, and maintenance of heads, valves, pipes, etc.
  • Uses and operates diagnostic tools and equipment while performing work to inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and install irrigation pipes, valves, controllers, and pumps. Operates heavy equipment.
  • Monitors campus grounds daily to look for stressed plant material and makes necessary adjustments to irrigation controller schedules.
  • Completes daily paperwork, reads blueprints, fills out work order paperwork, and completes other related documentation.
  • Consistently completes expected duties in a timely manner without constant supervision. Accepts responsibility for own work and follows through on commitments.
  • Assist with ice and snow removal operations, preparing the campus for special events, mowing, and planting as needed.
