An exciting position working in the San Francisco Estuary on some of the longest-running fish monitoring surveys in the State of California! This position is located in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's (CDFW) Stockton, California office and is primarily responsible for collecting, sorting, and identifying young fish and zooplankton samples generated during long-term ecological monitoring activities Smelt Larva Survey (SLS) and 20-Millimeter Survey (20-mm). Sampling aboard research vessels occurs from San Pablo Bay upstream through the Delta. The CDFW is a leader in San Francisco Estuary science, and this position will play an integral role in data gathering. Field samples will be processed according to documented protocols, and organisms are speciated to lowest taxonomic level using best available tools, science, and collaboration.

This position works mainly in the laboratory setting at the CDFW Stockton office. Individuals hired will learn about aquatic ecosystem monitoring, fish and zooplankton identification, chemical care and handling, and microscope use. In addition to these skills, they will also have the opportunity to learn data management skills including data entry and database quality control. Working Conditions
Using a dissecting microscope and laptop/desktop computer for most of the work day, 5 days a week, in a laboratory setting. Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Handling of ethanol and formaldehyde using appropriate personal protective equipment.

Must possess a valid driver's license, be able to operate a motor vehicle and equipment, and be prepared to travel using a State vehicle. Driving may be for long distances, often in heavy traffic and early in the morning.

This position is located at the CDFW, Bay Delta Region field office in Stockton, California.

This position qualifies for Public Service Loan Forgiveness Accrual Credit .

Possesses the following skills: use common laboratory equipment including microscopes, balances, and meters; perform laboratory procedures accurately and consistently; manipulate (e.g., with a probe or forceps), count, and measure biological organisms using a dissecting microscope up to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week; accurately and completely record data on datasheets; and use computers for data entry in Access and Excel databases. Possesses the following abilities: Work safely with samples preserved with formalin and ethanol in properly ventilated situations up to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week; train and direct the daily lab activities of seasonal staff.

Additional Desirable Qualifications: Good driving record; additional course work or experience in biological sciences; interest in a career in biology or fisheries science.
