The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is seeking a Director of Social Work & Addiction Department to oversee daily operations; develop departmental policies and protocols; oversee staff development and caseloads; provide clinical supervision and supervise Social Work & Addiction Department staff.

Hours: Monday-Friday 9AM-5:30PM

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
  • Acts as supervisor to direct reporting staff and graduate level social work interns; and oversee all other staff as needed.
  • Assesses plans, implements, evaluates, and collaborates in the development of patient's treatment plan.
  • Functions as a patient/family advocate within the hospital and community system.
  • Provides clinical documentation.
  • Coordinates and case manages all the client's needs which include but is not limited to: Psychosocial , Rehabilitation, Family, Community, Forensic, Financial, Placement.
  • Develops and implement a comprehensive discharge plan in coordination with patient/family, team members and referring facility.
  • Provides consultation to personnel on the treatment of this clinically complex patient population.
  • Provides educational programming for department and hospital staff, community, families, and clients.
  • Participates in performance appraisal activities for department staff.
  • Stimulates deliberate and conscious planning for the improvement of planned change.
  • Participates in ongoing QA activities.
  • Recommends to the EVP QM the need for change in the system.
  • Actively participates in evaluation/research activities.
  • Contributes to the enhancement of the therapeutic milieu by active participation on committees and by providing both formal and informal teaching/training programs, including but not limited to: addiction treatment, new psychotherapy techniques, special populations and interventions.
  • Social Worker utilizes The Joint Commission/Tracer Methodology in conjunction with Case Managers to assess clinical care provided to patients. This information is presented to the medical teams at rounds to facilitate improvement in record keeping and patient care.

Required Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated ability in psychotherapy: including individual, family and group work.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective clinical interventions with a clinically complex, behaviorally challenging patient population.
  • Power to provide diagnostic skills that are age specific to the adult and geriatric population.
  • Understanding of and demonstrated ability to develop written treatment plans based on thorough assessment of patient's deficits/needs.
  • Thorough knowledge of the clinical process for the adult and geriatric population and the ability to develop a treatment plan that address this population with patient/family and staff.
  • Ability to develop and conduct training/teaching for clinical personnel on a variety of issues involving the mentally ill and substance abuse clients.
  • Capacity to supervise and lead clinicians of varied disciplines Ability to communicate efficiently both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information in compliance with Hospital Standards and HIPPA regulations.
  • Power to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Ability to utilize supervision effectively, i.e. the capacity for self-examination with specific reference to how one's own behavior impacts upon patients and colleagues.
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical social work and of the delivery of services and supervision of staff within the discipline.
  • Ability to teach clinical social work methods and techniques to social workers and students and to communicate the principles to other facility personnel.
  • Knowledge and understanding of social work administration and the assignment and delegation of responsibilities.
  • Understanding of the types and application of standard office filing systems.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures and regulations of the department and the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital and how they impact the worker, patient, and other staff. (Safety, infection, disaster, etc.
  • Provide knowledge for critical job elements through in-service training to keep staff current with respect to regulations and procedures governing such activities as discharge, entitlement, health care proxy, etc.
  • Identify, assist, and encourage staff participation in continuing education program for licensing and acquiring knowledge skills, and abilities that may be required by the needs of the patient or worker.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications:
First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: At least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a clinical social worker after earning a Master's degree in social work. Based on assignment to second-level supervisory positions, at least one year of experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

- A Doctorate in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, counseling education, or human services may be substituted for the required nonsupervisory experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.

- No substitution will be permitted for the required supervisory experience. One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

A Master's or higher degree in social work is required.

LICENSES:

- Licensure as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Social Work is required.

- Based on assignment, travel may be required. Those employees who elect to use a motor vehicle for travel must have a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license or the equivalent from another state.
