Senior Operating Engineer / Mechanical Journeyman

Position Information: Under general direction, maintains and repairs moderate to complex steam and chill water plant generating equipment and its related peripheral equipment, the tunnel distribution system, and all equipment assigned to the plant.

Essential Duties:
  • Monitors, adjusts, and operates boilers, chillers, and cooling towers.
  • May record and maintain auxiliary equipment records.
  • Mixes/combines various chemicals following instructions and safety procedures.
  • Conducts various water tests to check chemical levels. Determines when to adjust the chemical levels. Discusses any problems with Lead or Supervisor.
  • Troubleshoots any problems with the equipment. Performs periodic, preventive maintenance inspections.
  • May train new employees, including but not limited to, steam and chill equipment operation and the importance of maintaining equipment records. May train employees how to mix/combine chemicals and any safety precautions, and the proper use of various chemicals.
  • Performs more complex plant maintenance duties, to include but not limited to maintaining equipment and performing repairs within the individual's level of expertise.
  • May remove snow and ice from sidewalks, streets, and parking lots using tools and/or heavy equipment.
  • Participates in training and educational activities. May train other employees on procedures and operation of equipment.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the functions of any site support position to include assisting any skilled trade.


Job Requirements

Qualifications:

Required Education: High School diploma or GED, AND:
  • 18 months of steam and chill water plant operation experience.

Working Conditions:
  • Physical: Standing and walking for prolonged periods. Ability to grasp, reach, twist, bend and kneel. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. unassisted.
  • Environmental: Works in a power plant environment and with large machinery. Exposure to hazardous conditions. Exposure to steam, electricity/high voltage, hazardous chemicals, extreme cold and heat, wet, humid and noisy environment. When required, must wear appropriate safety equipment.

Certifications or Licenses:
  • Oklahoma City and Norman campuses: High Pressure Boiler License and State of Oklahoma High Pressure Boiler License.
  • Tulsa campus: City of Tulsa Unlimited First Class Stationary Engineer License.
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License in order to drive University vehicles or ability to obtain within 30 days from hire date.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of steam and chill equipment and operations
  • Ability to operate highly specialized equipment.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment to solve problems.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to read schematics, blue prints and drawings
  • Ability to understand and apply safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Ability to multitask.
