Microsoft Research (MSR) AI Frontiers labis seeking applications for the position of Senior Principal Researcher to join their team . This role can be located in any one of our 3 labs: New York City, NY, Cambridge, MA, and Redmond, WA.

Themission of the AI Frontiers labis to expand the pareto frontier of Artficial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, efficiency, and safety through innovations in foundation models and learning agent platforms.Some of our projectsinclude work on Small Language Models ( e.g. Phi, Orca),foundation models for actions (e.g., in gaming, robotics, and Office productivity tools)andMulti-Agent AI( e.g. AutoGen ).

We areseeking a Senior Principal Researcher to join our team and contribute to the advancement of Large Action Model (LAM) and Large Language Model(LLM) technologies.As aSenior Principal Researcher , you will play a crucial role in developing, improving, and exploring the capabilities of AI models . Your work will have a significant impact on the development of cutting-edge technologies, advancing state-of-the-art andproviding practical solutions to real-world problems.

Our ongoing research areas encompass but are not limited to:
  • Pre-training:especiallyoflanguagemodels, action modelsand multimodal models
  • Alignment and Post-training :e.g.,Instruction tuning and reinforcement learning from feedback
  • Continual Learning: Enabling LLMs to evolve and adapt over time and learn from previous experiences human interactions
  • Specialization: Tailoringmodelsto meet application-specific requirements
  • Orchestration and multi-agent systems:automated orchestration between multiple agents incorporating humanfeedback and oversight

As a Senior Principal Researcher inAI Frontiers, you willdesign, develop, execute, and implement technology research projectsin collaboration withother researchers, engineers, and product groups.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications
  • Doctorate in Computer Science or relevant field AND 5 + years related research experience
  • OR equivalent experience.
  • R esearch program demonstrated by a research program with publications at conferences : NeurIPS , ICML , ICLR , ACL , NAACL , CVPR , COLT , ECCV , ICCV , EMNLP.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate inComputer Scienceor relevant fieldAND 9 + years related research experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experiencein running large scale experiments with LLMspre-training and/or finetuning.
  • Experience with real world reinforcement learning, including large scale behavior cloning and policy optimization .
  • Experience increating, optimizing and runninglarge scale machine learning pipelines.
  • Experience with reasoning about learning systems including new theorems & proofs driving algorithm design
  • Experiencein building data collection and curation pipelines.
  • Ability to lead, collaborate, communicate effectively, and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Keen interest in real-world applications and impact.

Research Sciences IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.
