The University of Virginia is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Program Officer for a role in our ambitious new effort to launch the Precision Health Initiative , building upon ongoing Precision Health Research in Cancer and Youth Mental Health at the University. Our goal is to take advantage of the tremendous promise of precision health in enhancing disease and health outcomes in Virginia. The Senior Research Program Officer will be a member of the Precision Health Initiative (PHI) operations team and will work closely with PHI faculty to implement and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the new initiative. The Senior Research Program Officer will bring specialized technical knowledge in biomedical, public health, and/or genomics research and will play a critical role in liaising among the technical and operational staff supporting the program, faculty leadership, cores, and other key stakeholders. The Senior Research Program Officer will report to the Precision Health Initiative Director.

CORE DUTIES:
  • Oversee and administer research activities by evaluating the PHI programs and projects, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes.
  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.
  • Write and edit content for proposals, peer-reviewed publications, websites, donor stewardship, and other program activities under the general direction of the Co-Directors. Assist with the development of research grants, (i.e., may suggest new funding opportunities, write portions of grants, and/or summarize data for grant support).
  • Represent PHI as the key contact and subject matter expert and develop communications for internal and external constituencies. Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, fundraising, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings.
  • Monitor expenses, budgets, and finances of the program. Make recommendations on funding based on program spending.
  • May oversee and train students and fellows.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:
  • Advanced degree required.
  • Four years of Research experience in a relevant scientific field required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ph.D. in the biomedical sciences, public health sciences, or a related scientific field.
  • Research experience related to public health sciences and genomics.
  • Prior experience in technical and nontechnical writing.
  • Familiarity with funding agencies and academic research funding sources.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds including boxes, assistance moving tables, items at conferences (poster board holders), packs of water, etc.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds. • Ability to communicate and present information to others via presentations.
  • This is job involves extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • This is a hybrid position that will require the ability to be in the office up to two days a week in Charlottesville, Va.
  • This position does require the ability to work occasional extended hours, evenings or weekends and may require local travel occasional overnight travel.
  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends, responding to emails, emergencies surrounding events, events on weekends, travel outside of working hours, grant reviews/deadlines for publications, etc.

The anticipated start date is September 23, 2024. This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance with an end date of December, 2026.
