This Service Worker position supports the Core Services and Special Services divisions within the Solid Waste Services Department. Depending on the assignment, this position provides labor required to load garbage, recycling and yard waste materials into vehicles for disposal.
High School Diploma or GED and one year of maintenance or customer service experience related to assignment
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing and Certifications:
Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); frequent exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and moderate exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, movement restrictions, intense noise or travel.

This Service Worker position supports the Core Services and Special Services divisions within the Solid Waste Services Department. Depending on the assignment, this position provides labor required to load garbage, recycling and yard waste materials into vehicles for disposal.
- Collect waste on daily routes from the back of the collection truck, such as backyard containers to take to curbside and load into rear loader vehicles
- Load recyclable materials into recycling truck and yard waste into rear loader vehicles
- Place waste material barrels onto lifter and operate lever to dump contents
- Assist the equipment operator with backing the vehicle into refuse/recycling areas and with vehicle cleaning and upkeep
- Deliver, repair, assemble and remove collection carts
- Perform collections at missed stops and perform special collections
- Some positions may operate non-CDL vehicles such as pup trucks and alley trucks, and may drive trucks and load fallen tree limbs and roadside trash for delivery to the landfill

Licensing and Certifications:
- Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
