This position sits with Safe Kids Worldwide, a subsidiary of Children's National. Safe Kids Worldwide is a nonprofit organization working to reduce unintentional injuries to children ages 0-14 and build equitable and sustained systems that support injury prevention. Safe Kids works with strategic partners and an extensive network of more than 400 coalitions in the U.S. to reduce traffic injuries, drownings, sleep-related deaths, falls, burns, poisonings, and more. We achieve this work through a public health approach that includes research, interventions to educate and raise awareness, safety device distribution and advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels.

The SKW Research Manager will serve as a senior research professional and is responsible for overseeing operational and financial management and coordination of research projects under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Research and Network Officer, and Principal Investigators. Work independently and supervise research project support staff and oversee the day-to-day research project operations following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), organizational goals, and budgets. Demonstrate expert project, organizational, and communication skills and function as resource regarding the research and/or grants process. Demonstrate expert understanding of the federal and institutional regulations and policies governing research involving protection of human subjects (IRB, NIH). Function as a resource for those professionals requiring assistance related to research and train new staff. Ensure the smooth running of the research project teams including that colleagues are updated on all relevant issues, develops systems to track multiple projects including investigator and IRB information, patient recruitment activity and financial management as well as ensuring high data quality across all studies. Prepare Institutional Review Board applications for research proposals, develop and manage budgets and coordinate grant applications, progress reports and documentation submissions as required by the sponsor. Responsible for review of research-related invoices and expenses for accuracy compared operational plans, budgets, subcontracts and protocol.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree (Required)
Master's Degree in a related field (e.g., Public Health, Epidemiology, Nursing or other related field (Preferred)

Minimum Work Experience
6 years Bachelor's degree with > 6 years of relevant experience, including supervisory experience. (Required) Or
4 years Master's degree with > 4 years of relevant experience. .

Required Skills/Knowledge
Strong interpersonal skills with a high degree of analytical ability, ability to identify problems and find creative & effective solutions, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong understanding of Project Management concepts and ability to maintain and manage deadlines and multiple projects.
Knowledge of management principles.
Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

Ability to represent research department concerns in interactions with other departments within the organization.
Proficiency with personal computer and related software including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and at least one statistical software package (STATA, SPSS)
Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and related software (ArcGIS, Tableau) an asset.

Functional Accountabilities
Management of Staff and Organizational Relationships
  • Supervise study support staff (e.g., Research Coordinators, Research Assistants, etc.), including training, delegating tasks, overseeing daily activities, mentoring, guiding through demonstration of best practices, providing coverage when needed and offering opportunities for professional development.
  • Facilitate interactions among team members and/or project participants; exhibit inclusive approach to decision making and goal-setting processes; encourage participation from team members; consistently recognize the contributions of other team members.
  • Advise and mentor other project managers on approaches to resolving operational problems.
  • Schedule and facilitate research team meetings. Plan agenda and ensure that minutes are taken, edited and distributed.
  • Serves as a leader of others, from forming a top team that possesses balanced capabilities to setting the mission, values and norms, as well as holding the team members accountable individually and as a group for results.
  • Establish, build and sustain professional contacts for the purpose of building networks of people with similar goals that support similar interests.

Project Management
  • Coordinate and facilitate the research project management life cycle, including initiation, development, and implementation of various studies.
  • Responsible for scoping, coordinating early research activities, training research staff, and managing the completion of investigational forms.
  • Coordinate research project teams, and manage research project timelines, to ensure milestones are completed within the specified timeline and in line with annual objectives.
  • Assume primary responsibility for ensuring study is compliant with applicable government regulations, data access rules, and privacy regulations, as necessary.
  • Ensure that studies are properly resourced, managed and executed within budget and in accordance with established timelines and quality standards
  • Meet regularly with stakeholders, including research staff, sponsors and study teams, to collect and communicate business and research requirements, and set expectations for research-related work.
  • Responsible for the completion of both research and project management deliverables, including project plans and research schedules, progress reports and investigational applications.
  • Assist Principal Investigators with monitoring expenses, facilitating contracts, ordering materials and documenting all approved variances.
  • Ensure compliance and monitor performance of investigational sites/subcontracts for studies; prepare accurate and timely visit reports from all site interaction visits.
  • Lead education of and document creation for SOPs, tutorials, guidance and supplementation forms which support data collection, subject recruitment, organizational management of organizational requirements and overall efficient study conduct.
  • As directed by the PI, act as liaison between Sponsor Agencies (e.g. NIH, Foundation, and Partnering Universities) and internal study team communicating study timelines, while proposing and implementing solutions to problems that jeopardize the schedule or quality of studies.
Research Management
  • Assist with development and writing of proposals to obtain funding for ongoing and future research activities.
  • Assist with selecting the most appropriate methodology and techniques for facilitating the research.
  • Responsible for producing qualitative and quantitative research plans, designing research questionnaires and moderator guides.
  • Work with research project teams (on site and/or off-site), and project and research leads, to coordinate fieldwork initiatives, and conduct pre-research and post-research analyses and evaluations.
  • Liaison with Institutional Review Board (IRB) for submissions, correspondence, and regulatory binders, including administrative amendments.
  • Work with research team to facilitate & ensure protocol adherence, quality assurance and HIPAA compliance.
  • Consistently ensure timely sponsor/data center and IRB submissions by the PI and study team, and adhere to reporting requirements to the IRB, institutional department, sponsor as well as local and federal agencies.
  • Collect data, summarizes and interprets research data.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators and research project teams to author journal articles and to present findings at research seminars and conferences.
Organizational Strategic Planning
  • Contribute to the strategic plan for the Research Department including short-term and long-term objectives, monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effect changes required for improvement.
  • Identify problems and opportunities and addresses them, bring those that are appropriate to the leadership, and facilitate discussion and deliberation.
  • Compile and analyze data to support upper management decision-making.
