Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing testing and/or treatment and the use of equipment to minimize any hazards.

Reviews patient's medical history, allergies, current medications, patient questionnaire.

Explains procedures to patient before, during and after sleep study, to include pre-testing, testing and post-testing procedures.

Performs patient set-up: attaches electrodes and monitors to patient according to accepted standards.

Follows procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration, etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data. Monitors patient via video for any unusual sleep behaviors.

Ensures signals are received on the computer and all monitors are recording data throughout the sleep study.

Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free, making adjustments as necessary.

Documents routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results; able to recognize normal and abnormal sleep patterns.

Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.). Able to correctly interpret physiologic tracings and quickly make a decision to intervene regarding an emergency situation or potential for an emergency situation.

Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines. Scores clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) according to center specific protocols. Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.

Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

Maintains and operates all equipment safely and correctly. Inspects and tests Sleep Center equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.

Communicates clearly and concisely with the Sleep Center Manager, Sleep Center Medical Director and referring physicians. Maintains a good working relationship with Sleep Center staff and other departments.

Interacts professionally with patients and families, treating them at all times with respect and dignity.

Documentation meets current standards and policies.

Ensures patient forms and billing information is completed in an expedient manner.

Knowledgeable of common sleep disorders and treatment options.
Knowledgeable of Sleep Center equipment, its function and purpose, including calibration; selects appropriate equipment to use for the study.
Knowledgeable of protocols for CPAP and oxygen therapy.
Has knowledge of hospital policies and the functions of other departments.
Is acquainted with local fire and safety regulations.
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.
Stays current in field through continuing education, seminars, professional journals and societies.

Education
H.S. Diploma or Equivalent Req
Other Successful completion of an acceptable polysomnography program of no less than one years duration associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies required of a Polysomnographic Technologist. Pref

Experience
1 Year in a Sleep Lab/Center, preferably within a hospital setting Pref

Licenses and Certifications
RPSGT - Registered Polysomnographic Technician Upon Hire Req And
BCLS - Basic Cardiac Life Support prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly Req
