Clarification from the agency

U.S. Citizens and Non-U.S. Nationals who have resided in the U.S. or U.S. Territory for three (3) or more continuous years immediately preceding the start of Federal affiliation.

Duties

  • Performs maintenance and repair to small and large outboard engines (one cylinder, 4 HP to 6 cylinder, 200HP) to include electric motors.
  • Makes visual and operational checks, troubleshoots and diagnoses electrical malfunctions using a wide variety of test equipment, such as engine analyzers, voltmeters, ohm meters, spark testers, magneto analyzer, timing light, compression tester, etc.
  • Uses a wide variety of parts and service manuals, performs tune-ups and major overhauls to power head, replacing pistons and rings, bearings, valves and gaskets, repairs wiring and switches, adjusts throttle arms.
  • Also repairs lower unit (transmission) to include repair and replacement of reverse and forward gears and clutch; rebuilds starters, coils, points, condensers and shift levers and assemblies, adjusts carburetors, checks and replaces spark plugs.
  • Inspects equipment for damage and condition of and makes minor repairs to aluminum and fiberglass boats, repairs cracks with special kits; tightens rivets, seals/repairs leaks, and replaces floors and transoms.

  • Position, duty hours, location and/or activity are subject to change based on mission requirements.
  • The work is performed outside and in the maintenance shop in extreme heat and cold conditions; dust, dirt and grease are always present.
  • Mechanic is subject to cuts, bruises, strains, burns, and noise from operating engines.
  • The mechanic makes repairs on equipment within areas that are tight fitting and hard to reach, this requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds, occasionally, may be required to lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds.
