Project/Unit Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) Aerospace, Transportation and Advanced Systems Lab has opportunities for a Software Engineer in support of DoD test/training range research and development. Responsibilities of this position include system installs, development of custom training software applications, integration of threat systems, support and maintenance of DoD systems, customer support and troubleshooting.

The DoD Live Mission Operations Capability (LMOC) program supports Air Force Training ranges and provides secure technology solutions to enable training. This position will be immersed in the Air Force training mission and have the opportunity to frequently interface with uniformed service members and DoD Civilians, and work closely with system end-users to ensure implementations meet their operational needs, and to help identify future system requirements.

This position will report to the GTRI Utah Field Office, Hill AFB.

Job Purpose

The Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software applications and products. Additionally, the Software Engineer manages software development teams, provides technical leadership, and establishes software development lifecycle practices and processes. The Software Engineer is proficient in programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, C, C++, C#, Ruby, Python, Scala, and Groovy. In this role, the Software Engineer requires extensive knowledge of programming languages, software development, computer operating systems, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), DevOps, Application Programming Interface (API) development, container development, and distributed systems. The Software Engineer also applies engineering principles to software creation, manages production releases of software, performs code reviews, merges feature development branches, and analyzes and triages issues. The necessary skill areas for the Software Engineer include programming and coding, fundamentals of computer science, software design and architecture development, algorithms and data structures, information analysis, software debugging and testing, and working on development teams. The Software Engineer also works with sponsors to curate requirements, define sprint work items, set priorities for work backlogs, and organize development teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform software development, debugging, modification, enhancement, and documentation.
  • Develop and maintain kernel and user-level software and scripts.
  • Contribute to technical reports and presentations.


Additional Responsibilities

  • Development and management of software project requirements through design, implementation, test and integration.
  • Work closely with DoD customers and system end users to ensure implementations meet their operational needs and to help identify system requirements.
  • Demonstrate expertise in virtualization, automated processing, orchestration of tools, software development, systems architecture and networking concepts.
  • Implement best of breed agile software development practices to deliver software.


Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited degree program relevant to this position will be considered. The candidate must have a graduation date of no later than May 2024.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in software development concepts.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance.
  • Strong Math Skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts.
  • DoD Experience with Knowledge of Military aircraft, simulators, and munition systems.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas.


Travel Requirements

  • 10% - 25% travel.
