Solid Waste Administrative Intern - Public Works (Part Time)

ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Phoenix Public Works Department is currently seeking to fill two part time internship positions that will support the Solid Waste Division (SWD).

The Public Works Solid Waste Administrative Internship program is geared toward college-level students interested in Solid Waste management, sustainability, and an environmentally focused career within the public sector. During the 10-month internship, interns will assist management staff in researching and implementing innovative solid waste practices designed to increase operation efficiency within the program and enhance solid waste services for customers. Interns will be asked to perform a wide range of administrative duties that support the three Solid Waste Divisional sections: Field Services, Diversion and Disposal, and Customer Engagement Services.

Duties include and are not limited to:
  • Researching and developing solid waste innovations.
  • Implementing council approved solid waste programs.
  • Reviewing and analyzing current internal processes.
  • Developing core business technology solutions and services and finding solutions to support operation functions.
  • Conducting research, statistical studies, and analysis.
  • Design studies, conduct surveys, collect data/information, analyze findings, make interpretations, and present recommendations to management.
  • Support SWD management with daily projects aimed to bridge any found performance gaps or areas impacted by regulatory changes.
  • Managing different projects, while ensuring that outcomes align with citywide goals and established divisional objectives.
The successful interns will work under the direction of the Public Works Solid Waste Administrative Assistant II and will provide support to the Solid Waste Field Services Division, Customer Engagement Services Division, and the Diversion and Disposal Division.

  • Data collection and survey research techniques.

  • Take initiative, solve problems, and exercise good judgement.
  • Learn job-related information primarily through oral instruction, on-the-job training, and observation.
  • Produce written documents in English with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Work cooperatively with other city employees and departments.
  • Craft and provide presentations for a wide variety of audiences.

SALARY

$19.07 per hour

BENEFITS

Part-time employees are eligible for earned paid sick time, city training, and free or discounted bus and light rail fares.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree with major course work in the professional area for which internship is considered.
  • OR current enrollment in a Bachelor's degree program related to the internship's professional area.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • Must be able to work twenty hours per week for ten consecutive months. Weekdays and hours are negotiable.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

Preferred candidates will be actively enrolled in a Master's program in Public Administration, Sustainability, Business, Business Analytics, Business Technology, or a related field at an accredited college/university.

Experience with:
  • Performance management, continuous improvement, or similar fields.
  • Working as part of a work group.
  • Community development, human-centered design thinking, and/or community research, as it relates to public service.
  • Conducting research, statistical studies, and analysis.
  • Collecting data, analyzing findings, and offering recommendations to management.
  • Presenting recommendations to management.
  • Working with Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint).
  • Research and design techniques, methods, and procedures.
