Solid Waste Service Supervisor I

Entry Salary: $51,077.75

Under limited direction, the Solid Waste Service Supervisor I provides leadership, guidance, and direction for the daily operations of the Solid Waste department. Oversees Transfer station, welding shop, inventory, and/or general refuse and recycling operations.

Essential Functions: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Coordinates, plans, and facilitates refuse and recycling operations for the City; tracks and plans routes, assigns tasks for various employees, and ensures maximum efficiency for drivers; communicates with drivers in the field and processes customer concerns and phone calls.
• Receives, organizes, and delegates daily work orders submitted by various customers and staff; enters daily data for operations and tracks completed work orders.
• Assists supervisor in providing annual evaluations for drivers and solid waste workers; provides feedback and direction, mentors, and facilitates teamwork and success.
• Oversees, monitors, and manages the daily operations of the welding and fabrication shop; reviews and assigns workload for container maintenance, pick up, and delivery; oversees operations of the commercial delivery truck.
• Assists, supports, and monitors the work of welding and fabrication activities; oversees special projects and custom fabrication needs, performs skilled tradeswork when needed, and ensures all repairs and maintenance are completed accurately and efficiently.
• Organizes inventory, commercial and residential recycling containers, commercial and residential trash bins, compactors, and roll-off open tops; orders and purchase needed containers and troubleshoots repairs to compactors and power units.
• Inspects and evaluates equipment, trailers, and bins for necessary repairs or maintenance; ensures equipment is functional and operational.
• Operates scale house weighing of trucks and communicating to the control room operator for truck loading; spots and addresses improper loading and ensures appropriate weight is dispersed.
• Operates various vehicles and equipment to perform solid waste collection, dumping and recycling; inspects equipment and monitors levels related to landfill management.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:

A valid State driver's license is required.

Possession and maintenance of Class B CDL with Air brakes.

SWANA Certification preferable or ability to obtain.

This position is required to operate the below equipment, machines, tools, and other work aides:

Radio, wide variety of collection of vehicles, and other equipment as assigned.

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma, High School Equivalency Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate AND

Three (3) years of experience in an integrated municipal solid waste operation; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
