The Somali Translation and Communication Specialist is instrumental in providing high-quality translation services for the Minnesota Department of Human Services. The primary purpose of this role is to accurately translate documents and materials from English into Somali, ensuring that they are linguistically correct, culturally relevant, equitably meaningful, and accessible to diverse communities within the state. This role involves a keen understanding of linguistic nuances, desired language proficiency, and the ability to maintain the integrity of the original message while adapting it to Somali. It also requires the ability to support community outreach and engagement activities to understand the communication needs of Somali-speaking Minnesotans and to inform improvements to overall communication strategy. Creative thinking and the ability to collaborate help demonstrate the agency's commitment to improving relationships with non-English speakers. The person in this role embodies that commitment.

Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:

  • Accurately translate and verify translations of written text for print and electronic documents, print materials, presentations, social media posts and other externally facing content.
  • Draft and translate content originally written in English, ensuring that it is accurately adapted for Somali-speaking audiences while maintaining the original message's integrity.
  • Works with community partners and others to co-create messages that resonate with Somali-speaking Minnesotans, building culturally and linguistically appropriate communication strategy across communication channels.
  • Perform functional duties required for translation implementation and project management including content management and maintenance.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Two (2) years of professional-level experience creating, implementing, and coordinating communication projects and initiatives across a wide range of mediums.

Experience must demonstrate:
  • In-depth knowledge of Somali and English, including grammar, idioms, and colloquial expressions specific to Somali-speaking populations in Minnesota.
  • Proficiency in accurately and efficiently translating a wide range of materials.
  • Ability to articulate complex issues, orally and in writing clearly and effectively in a manner that is understandable to a variety of audiences.
  • Editing and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to write and edit clearly in both the journalistic and standard office styles and in plain language.

*A Bachelor's degree in Communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, or related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience.*

Preferred Qualifications
  • A certificate or degree in a field that demonstrates and supports language proficiency.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Somali-speaking communities in Minnesota, including an understanding of cultural practices, social issues, and effective Somali language communication.
  • Knowledge of website usability principles and best practices for user experience design.
  • Experience creating easy to understand summaries and visualizations for website, social media, and other engagement platforms focusing on plain language and accessibility.
  • Variety of experiences working effectively with others from different backgrounds and cultures.
