Job Summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center is in search of a skilled and experienced Specimen Management Coordinator for our Laboratory Pre-Analytic team. As a valued part of the UTSW team, you will be a key part in helping manage the workflow and training of new hires on all critical phases of specimen handling and processing while maintaining quality control and adherence to protocols.

Work Location: Dallas Campus; assist other UTSW locations as needed.

Shift Requirement: 3:00 AM to 11:30 AM, Monday through Friday; rotating on-call schedule.

Minimum Experience and Education Requirements
  • Requires High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires ten (10) years of clinical lab experience and five (5) years as a specimen processor; or an associate degree with five (5) years clinical lab experience and three (3) years as a specimen processor.
  • Supervisory experience required.

Job Duties
  • Works under limited supervision to plan, coordinate, and supervise general duties and needs of Specimen Processing, and Client Services areas.
  • Ensures efficient scheduling of staff to perform daily activities of area.
  • Interviews and recommends selection of new laboratory personnel.
  • Performs evaluation as required for team members.
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the Quality Assurance activities of the area.
  • Provides management reports on status of QA activities.
  • Meets deadlines in accordance with regulatory, hospital, and department guidelines.
  • Ensures review of all daily, weekly, and monthly records and data including quality control, temperature monitors, batch logs, recollects, and turn-around-time.
  • Orders and allocates all laboratory supplies and materials; maintains adequate inventory to ensure efficient operation for specimen processing, & ambulatory clinics.
  • Assists in preparation of annual budget of department.
  • Makes sound decisions that consider cost versus benefit.
  • Monitors expenditures for personnel, equipment, and supplies.
  • Updates policies and procedures when indicated complying with regulations and department guidelines.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant CAP, CLIA, and TJC regulations.
  • Maintains personnel records; completes performance evaluations, performs, and documents competency evaluations, and trains both clerical and technical support using managerial skills according to department and university guidelines.
  • Meets or exceeds set goals and objectives of the department.
  • Ensures high quality and high patient safety standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
