Job Summary

A member of the IEEE-SA Executive Team, the incumbent of the position works in close collaboration with their peers to develop and implement professional staff/volunteer strategies in their domain. Key areas include supporting an evolving global vision with focused regional plans and an aggressive business development environment, while ensuring the current health of the total business. Incumbent shares responsibility with the Executive Team for the management, operations, coordination, performance results, and evaluation of all IEEE-SA functions and business units. On balance,the incumbent is specifically accountable for the goal-based success of their particular area of management. The incumbent works to ensure an empowered, talented, motivated, and professional staff team.

The position exists to ensure that the business structure of the Standards Association (SA) is aligned with current strategic plans and that revenue streams are diversified and investments are carried out in a disciplined manner to both grow and shift revenue streams from the sales of standards to full life-cycle businesses.

Oversees a regulatory-compliant business unit across all areas, including human resources, employment practices, risk management, financial planning, forecasting, and financial reporting.

Oversees a financially disciplined operation for the SA that properly aligns with IEEE corporate financial standards, considering reserve balances and investment opportunities.

Oversees a balanced and disciplined risk management program that examines risk on a continuous basis and takes measured, appropriate actions in response to findings.

Oversees and leads SA Digital Tranformation engagements as the business owner and direct liaison to the IEEE IT services. This

role will ensure that critical projects are managed effectively, the project outcomes are met within the necessary and

available timeline and budget, and that the long term digital strategy is effectively executed consistent with the businesses

and stakeholders expectations. This role benefits from strong change management and communications skills to successfully

achieve scalable impact.

Leads a high-performing, integrated staff operation that provides the full range of services to internal and external customers.

Leads a high-performing Senior Management Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Business operations and risk management: The incumbent directs the daily operations of the SA at 501 Hoes Lane in Piscataway, New Jersey. Directs all aspects of SA business operations, ranging from budgeting and financial management to regulatory compliance and risk management, SA membership processing, and provides a suite of centralized services for operational efficiencies including logistics, event planning, awards, sponsorships and inventory tracking. Incumbent may also serve as deputy to Management Council representative.
  • Financial management: The incumbent is accountable for the financial management of the IEEE Standards Association, which produces ~$55 million in annual revenue. Directs the annual process for the operational and capital budget and is accountable for monthly forecasts. Develops the algorithm for the annual review of staff salaries, overhead, and the distribution of infrastructure expenses. Evaluates and approves all expenditures based on budgetary requirements and program needs. Reviews and approves contracts, independent contractor agreements, and purchase orders. Provides financial analyses on an as-needed basis to support the SA Executive Team as well as the IEEE SA Board of Governors.
  • Human capital management: Manages a professional staff of ~30 individuals. Ensures the staff works toward the accomplishment of the SA's strategic goals, as well as their individual performance and incentive goals. Is active in the identification of staff needs, as well as the components of the hiring process, such as resume review, applicant selection, and interviewing. Evaluates performance twice yearly, and puts performance improvement plans in place, as needed.
  • IT Solutions oversight: Responsible for the systems, tools, equipment and related processes to implement and maintain staff and volunteer technical needs. Works closely with Corporate IT to leverage resources. Leads roadmap activities and provides prioritization and business requirements to various audiences.
  • Alliance Management Systems: Oversight of staff who support programs and groups working directly with ISTO clients. Serves as the relationship manager between ISTO and the SA. Attends Board meetings, primary HR contact, handles review and updates of all legal documents in an effort to maintain arm's length relationships.
  • Volunteer relationship management: Frequent and mission-critical interaction with the IEEE-SA Treasurer, President, IEEE Finance Committee, and other members of IEEE and SA's governance bodies.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in business, finance or related field Req

  • 15-20 years 15+ years relevant professional experience that demonstrates a solid knowledge of business philosophies, trends, and competitive positioning relevant to the operation of a successful standards organization Req

Skills and Requirements

  • Must be a skilled supervisor and developer of professional staff. Background must demonstrate exceptional organizational, project execution, and communication skills; Knowledge of IEEE operations, procedures and practices, products and services a strong plus
  • Strong command of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), as demonstrated through his or her experience required
  • Supervises staff work in the areas of strategic planning, financial, risk, and regulatory management, membership processing and operations centralized services.
  • Up to 20% travel may be required, some of which will be international in nature. Most travel will be overnight and over weekends and/or may occur on IEEE-observed holidays.
  • Must be a technologically savvy knowledge worker who seeks out technology solutions to business challenges. Specific technology knowledge and experience needed to produce the desired outcomes include the following: Microsoft Office Suite products (especially Excel), Oracle Financials.
  • Must possess a strong command of business English. Must be a consummate professional communicator who engages in active listening skills. Must be skilled in conversing with those for whom English is a second language.
  • Must possess solid presentation and platform-speaking skills. Audience size of both internal and external audiences may range in size.
  • Must possess effective writing skills. Incumbent will be required to create financial analysis, performance evaluations, performance improvement plans, requests for proposals, contracts and vendor engagement letters. They will also document SA-specific processes and practices. Incumbent will build an annual succession plan for their department.
  • Demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility for the success of the IEEE-SA. Must also demonstrate a sense of confidentiality, tactfulness and discretion in their communications and interactions with C-level industry representatives, government officials, and IEEE-SA volunteers, particularly the President of the IEEE-SA, and its Treasurer, who represent Standards on all financial matters to the SA Board of Governors and its Finance Committee and the IEEE Board of Directors and its Finance Committee. Expected to comport themself professionally in internal, inter-departmental communications, and to consistently maintain a positive image for IEEE-SA. In cross-departmental work, they are a positive team player who works well within all levels of the IEEE-SA and IEEE staff.
  • Must operate with a high degree of confidentiality when handling IEEE-SA and IEEE proprietary information, as well as information associated with specific IEEE staff members and co-workers. Must protect IEEE and IEEE-SA proprietary and confidential information.
  • Expected to provide leadership to all staff and volunteers, and set the highest standards and criteria for the ethical and optimum functioning of the SA under both day-to-day and exceptional circumstances.
  • Expected to develop career paths based upon staff aspirations and needs, as well as an awareness of individual capacities and capabilities.
  • Must have the ability to perform research, gather data, draw conclusions, make decisions, and utilize results to create meaningful analytical tools and reports, document and communicate information, and improve the IEEE and the IEEE-SA through continuous process improvement
  • Expected to function in a self-motivated manner while managing multiple projects and tasks simultaneously; Must be able to stay current on related updates and regulatory changes, risk management issues, changes to GAAP, as well as changes to the IEEE and IEEE-SA operational, financial and strategic plans in order to understand the ramifications and translate them to what actions are required, and what technology tools are needed
  • Expected to ensure their supervisor and other members of the IEEE-SA management team are kept up-to-date on program and project process.
  • Must be able to function effectively in a dynamic, high-pressure work environment, while meeting all established timelines for budgets and projects; Must be able to resolve work schedule issues, and intensely personal issues related to staff requests for office space; Expected to assure the smooth and efficient functioning of their department
