Job Summary

The overall purpose of this position is to provide support for issues related to the effective use of all internal Publishing Operations production and composition systems, including digital asset management. The incumbent in this position is primarily responsible for ensuring the integrity of XML-tagged material and paginated PDFs produced in-house and by vendors. The role typically reports to a Senior Manager and manages no direct reports. This position works under general supervision. They will also serve as a backup to the manager. The incumbent must act independently, and use knowledge and experience to resolve issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in monitoring workflows, processes, and projects of information conversion and editorial support, recommending priorities, and reporting issues to the manager as needed.
  • Assist in digital asset management.
  • Communicate effectively with editorial staff and vendors and provide follow-up and solutions for open issues.
  • Provide support to ensure the timely and accurate production of IEEE Transactions and Journals in both print and online formats.
  • Assist staff in layout, XML, and math tagging, to meet IEEE standards of quality for archival material and style in accordance with IEEE DTDs.
  • Act as liaison between Publishing Technologies staff and editorial staff, taking the lead on resolving problems and recommending long-term solutions.
  • Act as backup for Manager, Information Conversion & Support, when necessary to answer questions from editorial staff, or solve problems that are of an immediate nature.
  • Prioritize daily assignments when the Production Editor Supervisor is unavailable.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience background in publishing processes and automation, with an emphasis in IT Help desk using the following Google mail, XML, Word, Excel, Unix, databases, PostScript, and PDF file creation. Req


Work Experience

  • 2-4 years Experience in publishing technology preferably with a service bureau or publishing company Req


Skills and Requirements

  • Proficiency in developing programmatic solutions to workflow problems and in database development. A working knowledge of XML editing software is a plus.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills in researching day to day issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with vendors and colleagues.
  • Experience working with non-technical staff to resolve technical problems.
  • Must be diplomatic, responsive, and a team player.
