We are looking for a talented Sr Gear Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Components Business Segment in Troy, MI.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
  • This product focused, developing leadership position performs established technical tasks at the sub-system and/or component level for current and future products within a given business unit or corporate area. This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of the product centered nature of this position, they are very often a central point of coordination and decision making between product line engineers, customer teams, systems engineers, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.
  • Obtains input from stakeholders such as technical managers, project leaders, other product and manufacturing engineers and supplier partners to deliver information and recommendations that lead to quality product decisions.
  • Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of technology integration, design, analysis and experimental test verification and validation for both new and current products that impact product form, functionality and overall project risk trade-offs.
  • Creates, manages, improves and applies processes such Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG) and tools such as 7-step problem solving, design review checklist and other specialized tools required to support the processes and enable high quality decision making.
  • Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.
  • Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units.
  • Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.
  • Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect).
  • Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.
  • May also include academic or industry collaboration in a competency or discipline area.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role you will need the following:
  • Product Development Execution, Monitoring and Control - Plans, schedules, coordinates and executes the activities involved in developing a product to a respectively aligned hierarchy of requirements and technical profiles; monitors and communicates across functional boundaries to meet project resource and quality expectations; ensures product capability meets or exceeds expectations and takes mitigating actions when project risks are higher than expected; understands the full product life cycle process and stakeholders.
  • Product Failure Mode Avoidance - Mitigates potential product failure modes, by identifying interfaces, functions, functional requirements, interactions, control factors, noise factors, and prioritized potential failure modes and potential failure causes for the system of interest to effectively and efficiently improve the reliability of Cummins' products.
  • Product Interface Management and Integration - Identifies and analyzes the interfaces and interactions across system boundaries by specifying the requirements and limits to ensure that the product meets requirements; controls the interactions across the system element boundaries by making sure that they remain within specified limits; integrates system elements by creating an integration plan, including identification of method and timing for each activity to make it easier to find, isolate, diagnose, and correct.
  • Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.
  • Product Verification and Validation Management - Develops product systems validation plans from a variety of inputs to identify failure modes, while managing product risk and relative priority; negotiates product requirements against capability to guide project scope; evaluates analytical, simulation and physical test results to verify product capability and validate requirements; assesses legacy versus proposed system solution capabilities and produces recommendations with technical documentation to support product decisions.

Education, Licenses, Certifications
  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience

Demonstrated success having worked in a Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering role on lower complexity product development activities, translating customer needs and negotiating into product development plans, technical profiles and/or product specifications with a proven track record of successful product decisions.

The senior gear engineer will be responsible for the design and analysis of Spiral Bevel, Hypoid, Straight Bevel, Differential and Parallel Axis Gearing used by Meritor in current and future products. The Senior Gear Engineer will also provide support to various product engineering groups and provide specialist guidance in application, development, manufacturing, quality of Meritor geared products. Responsibilities require experience in various gear design tools including but not limited to Gleason and Klingelnberg systems. The Senior Gear Engineer will work in a multidisciplinary environment with CAE, application engineers, test engineers and plant manufacturing engineers to facilitate design, development and production of different types of gears.

Responsibilities
  • The Senior Gear Engineer will report to the Sr. Chief Engineer Gear Technology and will work both independently and on teams depending on the type of project assignments.
  • This position is responsible for evaluating new gear design and analysis tools, development of new technologies to continually improving product performance and to reduce costs.

Principal Accountabilities:
  • Design, development, test, and release of all types of gears, splines and clutch teeth.
  • Analyze and optimize all designs for performance requirements.
  • Calculates designs for various manufacturing systems and interfaces.
  • Assure gear design meets all internal and external performance and durability requirements.
  • Responsible for analyzing gear inspection reports, engineering tests results, and issuing required approval letters. Troubleshooting of performance tests is required as necessary.
  • Approve test Lab set-ups and test reports.
  • Responsible for development and maintenance of DVP and DFMEAs plans on related gear programs.
  • Ability to work on multiple programs and on teams.
  • Responsible for conducting appropriate technology studies and investigations to obtain the best gear products in the market, utilizing current technological advances and corresponding engineering tools and manufacturing equipment within established schedules.
  • Interfaces with various functional areas, gear machine and tooling vendors supply system to coordinate for a timely release of the new gear product or revisions into production.
  • Attend Product Reviews, Design Reviews and Customer Meetings as necessary
  • Assist Cummins-Meritor Domestic and International Facilities as required.
  • Be able to travel domestically and internationally
  • Be able to write detailed technical reports and make technical presentations.

Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in the gear design and development for the vehicle industry.
  • Relevant software skills: Microsoft Office, Gleason T2000/Cage, Kimos and Calyx, Kisssoft.
  • Gear development and manufacturing experience is a plus
  • Problem solver who embraces an interest in reducing design cycle time, root cause resolution, and proactive design robustness philosophies.
  • Consistently drives for increased responsiveness and pro-activity, especially in regards to meeting and anticipating customer expectations.

Base salary rate commensurate with experience. Base salary range: $109,600 - $164,400
