Responsibilities

General Purpose:

The Fraternity & Sorority Affairs Associate Director focuses primarily on the oversight of fraternities and sororities and is a vital member of the student life student engagement team University of Rochester. This position provides strategic support and direction for these student organizations through leadership, advising, and advancing community relations, while connecting students to our signature community building programs like the Rochester Traditions.

Responsibilites:

Strategic Management
  • Provide strategic guidance as the campus' primary subject matter expert for the fraternity and sorority functional area, including short and long-term planning, assessment and evaluation of outcomes (e.g., accreditation process, new member orientation), risk management assessment and intervention (hazing issues, alcohol and other drug risks, event procedures), budgetary oversight and management, student learning and development.
  • Manage daily operations including budgetary oversight and management, student advising, collaborations with other staff, program administration, and direct intervention in critical or high- profile incidents and situations (conduct violations, structural or procedural critical failures of organizations).
  • Supervise and coordinate all aspects of sorority and fraternity recruitment and intake in conjunction with an Assistant Director.
  • Work to ensure that the fraternity and sorority community are fully engaged in the campus community through leadership development programming, UR Late Night programming, Rochester Traditions programming, and other relevant Student Life initiatives.
Student Organization Advising
  • Serve as the primary advisor to the executive boards of the three governing councils (Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, Panhellenic Association), the Order of Omega honor society, and the individual fraternities and sororities.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to all the IFC recognized (Interfraternity Council) Fraternities
  • Provide consultation with individual chapters and the fraternity/sorority community regarding scholarship, social, and community service programming; recruitment; leadership development; and the implementation of policies and regulations.
  • Oversee fraternity and sorority system growth through well-managed recruitment and new member education programs.
  • Work to help develop relative trainings for student organization advisors and student leaders
Fraternity & Sorority Community Relations
  • Advise, educate, and support a network of 100+ stakeholders¿ including alumni advisors (indemnified university volunteers), university staff, inter/national organization partners, and vendors¿ working collaboratively to capitalize on shared interests and navigate conflicting priorities in mutual support of undergraduate fraternity and sorority members.
  • Promote the fraternal experience to various constituencies including students, parents, faculty and staff members, alumni, and community stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for the fraternity and sorority community and campus departments
  • Serve as the liaison to the annual review process. Assess individual and collective Chapter Advocate/Alumni Advisor needs for services, resources, programs and support. Coordinate programs and services accordingly.
Supervision
  • Provide direct supervision including selection, training, and performance evaluations for the following staff members:
  • Assistant Director, Student Organizations
  • Graduate Assistant (shared throughout department)
  • Undergraduate student coordinators (shared throughout department)
Fiscal Management
  • Develop and monitor budget pertaining to FSA specific programs/trainings
  • Oversee operational and gift accounts for approximately 55 accounts managed through the university in conjunction with the Finance Manager
  • Seek opportunities for external fundraising.
Administrative Duties
  • Provide leadership within Student Engagement, Office of the Dean of Students, Student Life, and the University through participation in meetings, committees, and activities that advance Student Life priorities and University Mission¿ areas of focus include campus events (including late night programming and Rochester Traditions), alcohol policy & education, student support, student safety, and leadership development.
  • Consult with local, national, and campus personnel regarding fraternity/sorority expansion activities.
  • Provide additional programmatic support for departmental programming initiatives

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Masters Degree in Student Personnel, Guidance and Counseling, Social Services, Higher Education or related area
  • 3-5 years required (5 years preferred)
  • Knowledge and practice of student development theory, counseling and advising practices, current fraternity and sorority issues, and risk management policies;
  • Ability to organize, implement, and evaluate student programs, including membership recruitment and leadership development;
  • Evening and weekend work is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise Greek-letter organizations.
  • Effective budget and supervisory skills
Preferred:
  • Membership in a Greek-letter organization preferred.
  • Outstanding communication skills, including direct interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of student organization advising and large-scale event planning required
  • Knowledge and training in risk management required
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee risk management assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively and develop innovative programs and solutions to problems.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team to accomplish objectives.
  • Skills relevant to establishing and maintaining successful partnerships with alumni, parents, faculty/staff, administration, members of the community, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret data, distinguish nuances, and evaluate multiple courses of action.
  • Ability to take initiative, balance multiple projects, set priorities, and work autonomously yet also as a member of a team.
  • Ability to communicate difficult/sensitive information.
  • Ability to effectively testify in court or other legal proceedings.
  • Experience with computer technologies and sophisticated software applications.
  • A personal belief in mission, goals and objectives of private higher education and a desire to change the world.
  • Willingness to promote the impact of student life at the University.

Pay Range: $60,431 - $84,603 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job.
