The Role
As an Industrial Engineer on the material flow team, you will be responsible for designing solutions for manual and automated material handling. This role will drive high-impact changes to factory layouts and innovation of conveyance methods, revolutionizing the way we think about part presentation and driving optimization across the entire supply chain. You will be part of a team that is deeply collaborative, fast-paced, and focused on first-principles solutions to some of Tesla's most difficult challenges. We work on new products and new factories to drive step-function change in factory design efficiency to reduce product cost.



Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed material flow models for new and existing products to project material flow headcount, assess congestion, execute on buffer quantities, and ensure overall feasibility
  • Work closely with manufacturing engineering teams to develop lineside interfaces for pallet presentation and part picking
  • Detail manual and automated material handling solutions to compare feasibility and ROI in early program stages
  • Detail site logistics plans to support logistics yards, trailer maneuvering, and overall integration with people and production flow
  • Conduct factory wide layout analyses to ensure optimal material flow distances and vertical adjacency of production lines
  • Create 3D dynamic simulation models as part of the design process, ensuring part-by-part and overall system solves
  • Present on equipment and processes to executive team for concept and CapEx approval


Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in material handling and/or high volume manufacturing
  • Extensive detailed material flow analysis experience to make data-driven decisions and summarize results for executives
  • Deep understanding of material delivery methods (i.e. powered industrial equipment, automated guided vehicles, conveyor, rail-guided vehicles) and strategies (i.e. forklift-free)
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to drive projects with diverse teams in a high volume manufacturing environment.
  • Experience quantitatively solving ambiguous factory design problems at a systems level
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Extensive experience with Excel (VBA a plus)
  • Extensive experience with AutoCAD or Revit
  • Experience with discrete event simulation software, FlexSim preferred
