The Amazon Private Brands team designs innovative machine learning solutions to drive customer awareness for Amazon's own brands and help customers discover products they love. We are an interdisciplinary team of Scientists, Economists, and Engineers, that incubates and builds disruptive solutions using cutting-edge technology to solve some of the toughest science problems at Amazon. To this end, the team employs methods from Natural Language Processing, Deep learning, multi-armed bandits and reinforcement learning, Bayesian Optimization, causal and statistical inference, and econometrics to drive discovery across the customer journey. Our solutions are crucial for the success of Amazon's own brands and serve as a beacon for discovery solutions across Amazon.

To be successful in this role, you need to be comfortable defining a long-term science vision and translating that direction into specific plans for scientists, as well as partnering with engineering and product teams. This is a role that combines science leadership, organizational ability, technical strength, product focus and business understanding. The ideal candidate will be an independent thinker who can make convincing, information-based arguments. With a focus on bias for action, this individual will be able to comfortably lead a large team of Applied Scientists. This is a unique, high visibility opportunity for a leader who wants to dive deep into a breadth of science problems and have large business impact.

Key job responsibilities

- Lead a large group of talented applied scientists to deliver machine-learning and AI solutions to production.

- Advance scientific innovation as a thought leader and practitioner.

- Develop science roadmap, run sprint/quarter/annual planning.

- Foster cross-team collaboration to execute complex projects.

- Perform hands-on data analysis, build machine-learning models, run regular A/B tests, and communicate the impact to senior management.

- Hire and develop top talents, and provide technical and career development guidance to your scientists.

A day in the life

You will manage a team of ~12 scientists, foster an agile development environment, champion machine learning and engineering excellence in delivering world class, Amazon scale, solutions.

About the team

The Amazon Private Brands team helps customers discover and engage with new, popular, and relevant products and categories from our private brand selections worldwide. We do this by combining science, technology, innovation, and creativity to build new customer-facing features and experiences.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Ph.D in Computer Science, Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Statistics, Mathematics, or related discipline.

- At least 7 years of experience in managing a team of Applied Scientists and Software Development Engineers.

- At least 7 years of experience in building large-scale machine learning and solutions at internet scale.

- At least 5 years of programming experience in Java, Python, Scala, C++, or other mainstream languages.

- At least 5 years' of experience in Big Data technologies such as: AWS, Hadoop, Spark, Pig, Hive, Lucene/SOLR or Storm/Samza.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience with Internet-scale distributed technologies and concepts such as large-scale recommendation, personalization, search, advertising, etc.

- Published research work in academic conferences or industry circles.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts and solutions to all levels of the organization.

- Experience in computational advertising.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $175,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $340,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
