GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:

The role is responsible for researching and drafting memo that assist and advise management in understanding the tax implications of proposed business activities and transactions. Primary objectives are tax planning of entities by interpreting tax regulations, completing tax returns, and ensuring tax compliance. Primary responsibility are domestic tax research and planning with an emphasis on North America tax compliance for income taxes as well as research and planning related to ASC 740. Through experienced assessment, planning, and monitoring, this position ensures that all tax rules are properly followed, tax risks are effectively managed, tax returns are accurate, and tax obligations are minimized to maximize profitability.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Functional and Technical Skills
  • Direct team members and oversee the completion of federal, state, local, and special tax returns by collecting, analyzing, and formatting financial information, and manage the tax department team and mentor their development
  • Identify, research and document various tax issues/risks such as Interest Capitalization, Uniform Cap, Fixed Asset capitalization policies, Accounting Methods, and section 174
  • Monitor federal, state and international income tax law changes and assist with implementation of improvements for existing internal tax policies and systems
  • Research ASC 740 implications of business activities and transactions to ensure proper recording of income tax provision and tax payable and deferred accounts within financial statements of all entities and provide recommendations on managing/reducing the Company's effective tax rate
  • Work closely with team members in researching, documenting, and implementing appropriate tax savings strategies to comply with applicable laws/regulations mitigate tax risks

Tax Compliance
  • Co-manage tax compliance process for federal and state income tax returns outsourced to external service providers.
  • Oversee tax team with tax provision process at year-end for external financial statement audits and identify/evaluate financial statement risks
  • Oversee Canadian income tax and withholding tax compliance and assist with allocation methodologies required for such compliance
  • Oversee tax fixed assets system for federal, state and international requirements
  • Co-manage federal, state and local income tax audits
  • Co-manage Federal and state R&D credit projects, WOTC and other federal and state incentive credits
  • Co-manage federal/state quarterly estimated tax payments and extensions through accurate taxable income projections and develop cash tax models for inclusion in LRP

Customer Interaction/Management/Support
  • Proactively interact with business units to understand the activity, develop information requests, and analyze data utilized in the preparation and filing of various jurisdiction's tax returns
  • Manage tax team in providing feedback to business units regarding the tax impact of transactions, provide primary support for researching various jurisdictions' indirect tax impacts and propose related tax planning

Leadership & Talent Development
  • Train, mentor, and develop tax team members
  • Plan, execute, direct and complete domestic and foreign tax projects to budget


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and/or Finance; Relevant work experience considered

Experience: 9+ years of combined work experience in relevant industry and/or public accounting (CPA) firm, including at least 7 years of Corporate Tax experience, US Federal multi-state, local, and international tax issues. Knowledge of accepted accounting rules, practices, tax laws, and reporting requirements. 7 years of detail oriented, Excel proficiency and Microsoft Suite.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and experience in leading a team with a passion for mentoring team members
  • A working knowledge of railroads, transportation, heavy construction, or combination
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly become familiar with Railroad products and services, particularly about maintenance of tracks and structures
  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Strong project management skills
  • Knowledge of computers and software with good word processing skills using Microsoft applications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master's Degree in Taxation

Licenses/Certifications: CPA, member of Tax Executives Institute, MNCPA and/or AICPA
