Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Manages the daily operation of train movement of all trains including revenue, non-revenue, foreign line and work equipment to ensure safe, reliable, cost-effective and on-time performance of all rolling stock. Manages the movement of shop equipment (disabled engines and coaches) to designated repair facilities. Ensures that rail infrastructure is maintained as required, and that all rail equipment is delivered in a timely fashion for programmed maintenance and repair.
  • Develops rail contingency plans during times of rail service disruptions and coordinates implementation with senior management and line supervisors. Notifies Operations Communications, Public Information and Passenger Communications of contingency plans to keep customers informed and allow them time to seek alternate transportation, if necessary.
  • Manages assigned staff and conducts federally mandated operations tests and inspections to ensure compliance with NORAC operating and safety rules.
  • Manages collection and assimilation of Mechanical, Engineering and other data for input into the daily chronological report. Prepares and reviews UORs. safety reports, inspection reports of equipment, signals, track and structures involving accidents and incidents. Coordinates with Safety and Claims departments regarding analysis of accidents and incidents. Notifies FRA, NTSB and other state and local agencies of serious events.
  • Manages the coordination of engineering projects, daily maintenance, and outside requests for construction or repair projects with operation of scheduled trains.
  • Develops and implements training programs for Train Dispatchers on TMAC (Train Management Control) system.
  • Mentors new Supervisors of Train Operations to ensure proper training and provide potential for further advancement within NJ TRANSIT.
  • Manages and maintains the Rail Operations Center Building to include daily maintenance, vendor contracts, renewals, inspections, inventory and supply.
  • Manages and maintains oversight over the ROC employee payroll system Kronos.
  • Manages and maintains scheduling for supervisors, train dispatchers and clerks to ensure proper coverage for all assignments.
  • Coordinate and attend weekly and monthly meetings with Amtrak management to ensure track outages do not impact NJT passenger service and ensure NJT services are protected during service disruptions on Amtrak territory.

This Position Supervises:
  • Supervisor, Train Operations

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:
  • High School graduate or equivalent and at least seven (7) years of supervisory experience in rail transportation and train movement such as: delegating work, follow-up, and instruction/training.
  • Crew Caller experience required

Knowledge and Skills
  • Must have train dispatching knowledge and/or thorough
  • Knowledge of Block Operator/Bridge Operator duties, and
  • Ability to understand physical operations within the Transportation Department.
  • Knowledge of rail agreements and rules governing safety sensitive positions required.
  • Extensive knowledge of computer systems such as TMAC, and TSR mainframe.
  • Knowledge of Railroad Operations including track, signal and catenary,
