Position Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineer collaborates with the Capital Construction and Repair & Maintenance teams to optimize the efficiency of the existing campus infrastructure; critically analyze data which informs long-term planning decisions; and troubleshoot immediate issues. The Sr Mechanical Engineer also assesses the physical campus infrastructure against enterprise standards to support effective equipment operations and efficient utilities usage. Systems and equipment include but are not limited to: HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, steam, chilled water, and medical gas.

For relevant renovation or new construction projects, the engineer develops and/or reviews the MEP/FP scope; budget estimates; and provides technical direction as needed.

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer operates with a very high level of autonomy and serves as an engineering generalist utilizing both internal and external consultants as well as other resources. Projects coordinated by this position frequently involve a high level of problem resolution and negotiation. This position manages consulting engineers and coordinates closely with internal staff.

Other responsibilities:

  • Assists with escalated day-to-day troubleshooting of MEP/FP equipment prior to bringing in consulting engineers / vendors.
  • Gathers and maintains policy documentation required for hospital accreditation through accrediting and regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission.
  • Initiates and implements sustainable practices and/or equipment to reduce utility usage throughout campus.
Essential Functions:

  • Analyze short- and long-term capital needs of HVAC, controls, plumbing, electrical, and other systems. This on-going analysis will strongly influence the selection and scope of future capital planning and renewal projects.
  • Working together with the Space Planner and the Capital Construction team, make recommendations to strategically reduce deferred maintenance.
  • Assist coordination efforts with MGB Engineering group to maintain transparency.
  • Provide in-house engineering / facilities operations expertise to assist in the selection of new systems and equipment.
  • Review all renovation projects with MEP/FP content to assure it meets McLean's and MGB's standards of care.
  • Responsible for generating and maintaining MEP/FP standards for the McLean campuses.
  • Maintains current knowledge of standards / codes:
    • American Society of Mechanical Engineers Standards (ASME),
    • American National Standards Institute (ANSI),
    • MA Building Code,
    • Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA),
    • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA),
    • American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE),
    • American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE),
    • Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO), and
    • other regulatory agency requirements for compliance.

Qualifications

Required Education and Prior Work Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED Required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, other engineering, or equivalent experience strongly preferred
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in HVAC, plumbing, and/or fire protection desired, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting.
  • Two (2) years' experience leading work groups and/or two (2) years' of construction project management preferred
  • Prior project work or management experience in a large campus setting
  • At least (2) years' experience working with historical buildings.
Licensure

  • Professional Engineer License (PE) is required within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid Driver's License within the State of Massachusetts required within 120 days of hire.
  • Preferred Licensure/Certification: Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CEM) of Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
