  • Develop sensors and sensor systems used to inspect components for damage, monitor industrial processes, or measure material properties across several industries.
  • Lead experimental and theoretical evaluations of sensor designs and develop new measurement techniques.
  • Develop algorithms for processing and interpreting of data generated from nondestructive evaluation sensors.
  • Conduct research in applying advanced nondestructive evaluation techniques, primarily guided waves and/or bulk wave ultrasonics, in novel and challenging applications.
  • Successfully lead research proposal efforts and function as a part of multi-disciplinary project teams.
  • Interface with client technical representatives to ensure projects and proposals meet client expectations and requirements.

  • Lead technical teams using capabilities in analytical and/or experimental design. Projects may include literature reviews, experimentation, system design, simulation, and testing.
  • Use commercial engineering software such as SolidWorks, MATLAB, or ANSYS for design and analysis related to sensors and sensor systems.
  • Conceive, develop, and deploy novel inspection and Structural Health Monitoring solutions.
  • Lead the preparation of technical reports and proposals; participate in conferences as a presenter and/or exhibitor.
  • Interface with customers at both SwRI locations and customer facilities in support of research, test, and/or inspection objectives.

  • Requires a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics or directly related degree field with related experience. Candidates with advanced degrees may be considered in lieu of some years of experience.
  • 8+ years: Experience in conducting research and development in the field of nondestructive evaluation, ideally utilizing ultrasonic waves and guided waves.
  • 8+ years: Expertise in using engineering software tools for design (e.g., Creo, Fusion 360, Altium, or SolidWorks) or analysis (e.g., MATLAB, ANSYS, COMSOL, Mathematica).
  • Familiarity with different sensor technologies for nondestructive evaluation, such as radiography, magnetics & electromagnetics, acoustic emission, or conventional ultrasonic inspection, is required.
  • Experience in preparing technical proposals, reports, and presentations is required. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with or without a team. Willingness to travel to support current clients and develop future work (
