DESCRIPTION

Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Formulates, implements, and monitors facilities management policies and programs. Develops plans to meet objectives and deliver results. Manages fiscal, physical and personnel resources and may manage multiple facilities and personnel.

Incumbent is responsible for leading and coordinating the operation, maintenance and repair of all Recreation facilities campus including, but not limited to, LionTree Arena, RIMAC, RIMAC Annex, Canyonview Aquatic Center, Natatorium Pool, Spanos Training Facility, NCRA Track and Field Stadium, Triton Ballpark, Warren ATR, Outdoor Courts, and Playing Fields. This position also participates in inspections of Main Gym Complex. Incumbent oversees all systems relating to maintenance, mechanic and custodial operations. In collaboration with Senior department managers, the incumbent acts as an advisor, technical specialist and project manager for all facility renovations and remodel projects, including plan and specification review, conceptual design, and the formation of design alternatives and solutions. Formulates solutions for facility problems, develops construction projects where necessary and manages those contracted projects through completion and payment.

Develops long range maintenance/repair project plans and assists in establishing annual budgets for those plans. Provides technical and general supervision over skilled, semi-skilled, and specialized staff in accomplishing their daily work. Participates in division's budget development and management, short- and long-term strategic planning and other high-level projects as assigned by the Associate Director, Operations.

Incumbent will directly supervise Superintendent, Custodial Supervisor, and 2-day shift Sr. Custodians (SX). May provide work direction to other departmental custodial, maintenance or mechanic staff as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Strong skills to facilitate and collaborate with various internal and external constituencies on short- and long -term facilities planning and management.
  • Strong analytical, research and report preparation skills to meet regulatory and budgetary reporting requirements.

  • Experience and knowledge to inspect construction in progress (general and specialty structures) and read, sketch and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Broad knowledge in the areas of facilities management, space planning and allocation, security, fire and safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Demonstrated ability to make short and long range plans for the maintenance, repair, and renovation of Recreation facilities.
  • Have a broad-based knowledge of all phases of building design and construction. Must be knowledgeable of building systems. Must have the ability to analyze and interpret construction contract documents and specifications; have a basic understanding of current university, federal, state, and local environmental regulations and building codes.
  • Experience and skills needed to lead and manage a technically complex, diverse and widely dispersed work team. Demonstrated performance management in union and non-union environments
  • Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal skills and strong customer service background.
  • Strong computer skills: Microsoft suite software, work management software, controls software (such as Metasys) and mobile technologies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing an operating budget and effectively managing allocations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills to prioritize assignments, set goals, and project department needs, while meeting deadlines. Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities at the same time.
  • Knowledge of construction, installation and fabrication techniques, including planning and project estimating. Ability to deal with a wide range of complex technical and project management related tasks where frequent independent interpretation and decision is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising facility maintenance and improvements along with building maintenance work to include one or more of the following: basic plumbing and pipefitting, carpentry, painting and plastering, service of machinery, electrical maintenance and custodial.
  • Extensive technical knowledge and understanding of building structures, roofs, exterior masonry, floor coverings, suspended wooden activity floors, walls, windows, doors, fire protection systems, elevators, electrical distribution systems, mechanical systems; HVAC and HVAC controls (DDC, pneumatic and electronic), HTHW & CHW systems, potable water, sewer, storm and natural gas and fire sprinkler systems, and related areas of work.
  • Demonstrated functional awareness of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered such as biohazards, radiation, chemicals, etc. Demonstrated ability to follow established procedures for dealing with such potential hazards.
  • Knowledge of contracting practices and ability to develop scopes of work, cost estimates, and necessary contract request and performance acceptance documents.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check and DMV check results.
  • If driving a university vehicle, must have current California Driver license, maintain good driving record and participate in the DMV pull program.
  • The regular work schedule for this position is Monday - Friday; 6:30 am - 3:00 pm. Must work occasional flexible, variable hours, including evenings, weekend, and holiday as operationally necessary.
  • This position is required to be on site for large campus events including but not limited to: Commencements, Sun God Festival, Welcome Week activities.
  • This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $104,900 - $198,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $50.24 - $95.26
