Position Overview:

The Attorney for the Ethics Council will answer questions and provide written guidance and legal opinions to officials and employees who are covered by the Conflict(s) of Interests Acts, as well as registered Virginia lobbyists. Duties also include drafting Formal Advisory Opinions, conducting legal research, providing training on the Acts and lobbying laws to officials, employees and lobbyists, and drafting legislation as may be required by the Division. The Attorney will prepare speaking points and memoranda as requested by Council members or members of the General Assembly. The Attorney may be required to assist other attorneys in DLS with legal research.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work quickly and efficiently
• Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
• Capable of working independently while being open to collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of the legislative process.
• Familiarity with the functions of the House of Delegates and the Senate.

Education and Experience:

• Active member in good standing of the Virginia Bar, or in the process of taking the bar after
graduation.
• 1-2 years of experience in a legal, staffing, or policy analysis role.
• Knowledge of laws, legal codes, government regulations, executive orders, and agency
rules.
