As the Staff Data Engineer, you are accountable to design, build, and implement critical components of the enterprise data platform in accordance with the strategic data and analytics needs of Western Alliance Bank.

This challenging role requires the best of your data management, cloud data engineering and technology knowledge to develop a cross-business unit data tier that is leveraged to improve our products and deliver insights. The Staff Data Engineer I is a pioneer in our modern data platform working directly with data analysts and data engineers. Embedded in the Enterprise Data & Analytics function, you influence the culture of data integration practices and enterprise data flows and are essential to mentoring other data professionals.
What we are looking for:
Implement data engineering solutions that satisfy the full data lifecycle including efficient technical hygiene and the use of Azure DevOps for the tactical implementation of the Western Alliance Bank data strategy and roadmap as it relates to data marts and analytics systems.
Develop ETL and data pipeline capabilities considering how data is created, transformed, maintained, stored, archived, analyzed, and shared across Western Alliance Bank and our partners.
Implement built-in quality and compliance- by-design in all data solutions.
Implement methods to include unstructured data and big data.
Lead the implementation of outcomes, recommendations, and designs from Data Governance and Enterprise Architecture.
Actively participate in making data architecture decisions.
Collaborate with product owners and business stakeholders to gain a working understanding of business requirements and operational processes.
Provide technical mentorship to team members and other data professionals.
As needed, perform data exploration and data profiling with tools.

Required Skills & Experience

Bachelors degree in engineering or related field or equivalent experience in data management and/or data analytics.
5+ years experience with data engineering specifically in Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) concepts and processes, enterprise data warehouse capabilities, database principles, and other related tools and technologies; preferably strong to expert in SSIS and Azure Data Factory.
3+ years experience designing, implementing, and supporting cloud data solutions; Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, and Azure DevOps CI/CD experience must.
Expert level experience in Python for programming
Expert level experience with at least one RDBMS and query language such as T-SQL, PL/SQL, Spark SQL.
Experience in conceptual, logical, and physical data design.
Experience with design tools as it relates to creating conceptual architecture diagrams and data flow diagrams such as Visio, Archimate, Lucidchart.
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
Familiarity with multi-cloud data management and transformation platforms or tools such as Databricks, Snowflake, Matillion, etc..
Experience in Agile, SAFe, and/or Scrum.
Experience integrating with data quality, data catalog and data lineage tools such as Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) is a plus.

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Familiarity with data science and analytics tools such as SPSS, SAS, Tableau, PowerBI.
Banking or financial services industry experience or other highly regulated industry experience
Certifications within Azure such as Azure Fundamentals, Azure Data Engineer, Azure Data Scientist, and/or Azure DevOps Engineer.
