About the Staff Nurse Role and The Churchill Clinic

Mon-Fri, 7:30a-4:00p, no holidays

The Churchill Surgical Clinic is the outpatient center for The Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care (TESSCC) at Massachusetts General Hospital. The division offers surgery for all types of traumatic and non-traumatic injuries. Our surgeons manage a wide variety of cases such as: abdominal catastrophes, bleeding, bowel obstructions, hernias, and infections. After hospitalization, patients will continue to receive care in the Churchill Surgical Clinic, whether that be for wound care, drain management, follow-up care or further surgical planning. The Staff Nurse will work alongside the surgeons, nurse practitioners, RN coordinator and medical assistants to provide high-quality outpatient care. The position will entail both clinical and administrative responsibilities.

  • Conduct assessment of patient needs including:
    • Evaluate/interview patients arriving to clinic, review patient chart, laboratory data and radiology results, review clinic schedules to ensure a productive clinic
    • Obtain vital signs/weight in the absence of the Medical Assistant
    • Triage patients to appropriate care (includes direct contact and telephone encounters) and conduct telemedicine visits for post-operative patients
    • Wound care, including wound VAC management, wound packing, and dressing changes.
    • Assist with clinic procedures such as: excisions, incision and drainage of abscesses and biopsies.
  • Assist surgeons and/or nurse practitioners with procedures or patient care.
  • Effectively explains and educates patients and/or family members about any necessary procedures or surgeries.
  • Documents and records all visits and procedures. Use EPIC electronic medical records.
  • Collaborate with the Patient Services Coordinator in scheduling patient admissions.
  • Maintains and develops professional practice through continuing educational programs and appropriate learning experiences.
  • Participates in assignments, committees, meetings, and projects.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience

  • 2 years of nursing experience required, surgical experience preferred


Education/Degree

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing


Licensure, Certifications, or Registration for a Staff Nurse

  • Current licensure as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
