Duties & Responsibilities

The Staff Nurse in Labor and Delivery has skills and competence in Prenatal Nursing and works within the scope of regulatory standards relating to AWHONN, NYSDOH 405.21 Maternity and Newborn Services, policies and procedures as set forward by HHC and Harlem Hospital.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Promotes a positive and pleasant attitude conducive to the workplace which enhances the Mission, Vision and Value Statement of the Network.
  • Triages patients through the obstetrical emergency room in order of priority
  • Does initial assessment on all admitted laboring and non-laboring ante-partum patients within eight hours of admission.
  • Applies external fetal monitor and interprets fetal heart tracing and uterine activity.
  • Completes on going assessment of fetal heart rate pattern and maternal status during labor.
  • Identifies emergency situations such as changes in fetal heart rate problems, changes in maternal physiological and neurologic status and promptly initiates actions and summons a physician.
  • Perform nursing intervention efficiently in case of maternal fetal compromise.
  • Does Apgar scoring on all newborns at one and five minutes of life in collaboration with the doctor at delivery.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of patient's rights by supporting the family centered concept of care, allowing father/significant other to be present during labor and at birth where possible.
  • Identifies patient/family learning needs (age appropriate) and teaches appropriate principles and procedures related to care in relation to age, with focus on adolescent mother.
  • Evaluates patient/family responses and effectiveness of nursing intervention during labor and post-partum.
  • Keeps abreast of current modalities to enhance skills. Seeks additional training in new techniques specific to obstetrical nursing services.
  • Meets all compliance standards/requirements such as Annual Physical Evaluation, Multi-Star Training and Customer Service Training.
  • Enhances personal and professional development through attendance to internal in-service training and external educational offerings.
  • Demonstrates a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
  2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).


Special Note:

For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
